MARCH 2008 NEWSLETTER ISSUE

This newsletter will be updated daily, weekly or monthly as needed in order
to keep our county friends and families up-to-date on museum news.
Please come back and view time to time.

PUBLICITY:

The museum is pleased to be advertised in the 2008 GREAT PLAINS COUNTRY travel guide that promotes tourism in Southwest OK.  Harmon County Black Eye Pea Festival 2008 is advertised in this travel guide, along with the Antique Tractor Pull and Ranch Rodeo.

PUBLICATIONS:

The Harmon County Historical museum has taken on the task to plan, compile and publish the third county history book, PLANNING THE ROUTE 3.  While the museum was not responsible for history books 1 and 2, we plan to make book 3 be as nice and informative as the first two.  This is a very ambitious project for us it has proved popular in the past.  Anyone with Harmon County history to share is welcome to participate.  For those of you who missed out on being in book 1 and 2 just follow the five W’s,  Who did What, Where, When and Why.  Drop your information along with pictures off at the museum.  Our hours are 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday.  Sorry, we cannot return your photographs.  We hope to have the book published by the end of 2009 or first of 2010.   Please read about the book 3 by clicking on the link on the main page of this museum website.  It will be updated from time to time, as will this newsletter.  So please watch weekly to monthly for new information on this newsletter page.

ON-GOING PROJECTS:

2008 Black-Eye Pea Festival, Saturday, August 9th    -   "Harmon County's Wild West Show"
The ladies of Harmon County have been diligently working on quilt squares to piece together for the annual 2008 Black Eye Pea Festival (BEP) quilt raffle, called "Granddaughter’s Flower Garden."  The BEP is sponsored annualy by the Harmon County Historical Museum.  Make your plans now to bring your family Saturday, August 9, 2008 to the BEP.  We also need volunteers to help make this a success.  Please come by or call the museum to let us know you wish to contribute items for prizes, will volunteer to give up an hour or more of your time for helping in the booths, or willing to help with the desserts that are donated each year.

The museum is actively receiving new accessions weekly.  Our Harmon County Centennial Family display is something to see and admire.  Betty Motley invested a lot of time and effort in making this project something the citizens of Harmon County could be proud of viewing.  Come in and see if your name and family pictures are on display.

ABOUT US:

At the monthly board meeting February 12, 2008, we elected to name this year’s Black Eye Pea Festival HARMON COUNTY’S WILD WEST SHOW.  Mark your calendar for the 2nd week-end in August.  Harmon County Historical Museum welcomes the opportunity to keep you informed of what is happening at the museum during 2008.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Just a reminder, January is annual dues month.  A single person is $10.00 and a couple is $15.00.  For those of you who have already paid, we say thank you.  We are anxious to have new vendors this year along with the old ones.  Children’s entertainment, arts and crafts, caricaturists, clowns, magicians, and food are always welcome.  The museum cannot survive without your memberships, memorials and donations.  We thank you for all of those, and we appreciate your promptness so we can pay our monthly cost to the building and utilities.  We are fully aware, "this is YOUR museum!!"

ARCHIVES FOR THE ‘MEMORIES’:

If you were a young girl or boy in the 50’s, you learned to skate with wheels not roller blades.  In the summer you played outside until twilight and chased lighting bugs.  You picked wild flowers for your Mother after she bathed you in Sweetheart soap.  The Lone Ranger and Flash Gordon episodes were the only excitement we watched on television.
