The City Drug

BY

Earl and Ora Groves

Earl Groves came from Eagle City, Oklahoma. He graduated from O.U. School of Pharmacy in 1913 and worked in drug stores. Ora and Earl were married Aug. 7, 1919 in Hollis. They bought the City Drug Store in January, 1923 and operated it for 34 years.

Earl was well known and often called "Dr. Groves", for he doctored people and animals alike. He would say, "I’ve got it right back here" and often his remedy cured sick horses, dog, pets, as well as people. Hollis had five doctors with offices upstairs over their drug store: Dr. W.G. Husband, Dr. Hollis, Dr. Hopkins, Dr. Lynch and Dr. Roy Husband.

Their store was a very popular place and noted for its ice cream,3 dips for a nickel. In the back was a large room called an ice cream parlor. One boy made ice cream all day. There was courting going on all the time in that room! It had a big fan and that made it very nice.
