In 1950 Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Machen built the grocery store on the corner of First and Jones Street. After a few years of operating the store, they sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. Sonny Gee. Gee’s ran the store for a few years before Mr. and Mrs. Machen bought it back. They then sold it to Lawrence and Mary Jo Beck. Gale and Mickey Caswell bought the store from the Becks in July of 1978. The Caswells owned the store for 16 ½ years before selling it to Gary and Tammy Caswell in January of 1995. The store burned April 1 2001.
Caswell Food Store was good to Gale and Mickey. They relate that they bought their first bill of groceries after they married in 1953 in this very store. Also that Gale worked for the Machens the second time the Machens owned the store.
