John C. BISHOP

            Graveside services for John C. BISHOP were held July 6 at the Westlawn cemetery with Rev. Jimmy HOFFMAN officiating.

            He was born Feb. 17, 1931 to William Oscar BISHOP and Birdie HOUSTON BISHOP and died July 2 at the Holdenville General hospital at the age of 68years, four months and 15 days.

            Mr. BISHOP spent his early years in the Atoka area. After finishing school there, he entered the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he worked for a short time in Corpus Christi, Tx. Shipyards and he also returned to Hughes County where he ranched.

            In the early 1960’s Mr. BISHOP began working for the Henryetta Construction Company along with his brothers.

            It was during this time that he was married to Betty Jo WALLIS in Texas. To this union two children were born Edward and Tammy. They moved to Henryetta in 1973 where he worked in oil fields. Following her death in 1977 John was left to raise a 10 and 12 year-old by himself. He returned to the Wetumka area in 1988.

            Mr. BISHOP had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the National Rifle Association.

            He loved to build things and being a cowboy.

            Survivors include a son, Edward, of Sugarland, Tx.; a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Mike BARTON of Sanger, Tx.; two brothers, Bert and Don BISHOP of Wetumka; a sister, Ada TYREE, of Porum; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Christine, Christopher, Nicole, Jessica, Mary and Victoria; along with several nieces, nephew and other relatives.

            Pallbearers were Race BISHOP, Rick BISHOP, Bert Wade BISHOP and Ray ANDERSON.

            Services were under the direction of Williamson Funeral Home.
