Born December 17, 1874 near Honey Grove, Texas to Jason and Maria Antoinette (Cravens) Daugherty, "Ed" was a 1912 field deputy for Grant Vincent and continued this and other work under succeeding officers.
He moved to Purcell in 1919 when offered continuous work by Johnny Ratliff as an "Undersheriff" until his death.
On May 9, 1925 he and Sheriff Johnny Ratliff were seriously wounded while trying to subdue a narcotics addict on Main Street. Sheriff Ratliff died the next morning. Ed Daugherty carried on the duties of the office in the absence of the sheriff, but died July 18th and was buried in Blanchard Cemetery. He left a wife and 5 daughters.
In 1985 his name was placed on the Peace Officers Memorial Monument in Oklahoma City for officers who died in the line of duty. He also was placed on the McClain County Memorial Monument.
