Green Hill Cemetery Davis, Oklahoma |
|||
| Green
Hill Cemetery is the municipal cemetery for the city of Davis, OK.
Before the white man ever set foot in the area, it was the burial place
of Native Americans who inhabited the area. There are many
unmarked and unknown graves in this cemetery.
Nelson Chigley originally had the area in his vast holdings of land and cattle. After the Santa Fe Railroad came through in 1886, he platted a town site to be built near the new depot. Mr. Chigley understood the necessity of having a shipping point for his cattle operations. He also was having supplies deliver by railroad instead of going to Texas by wagon as was the custom of the time. In 1886, Sam H. Davis, moved his general mercantile business from Washita, about 3 miles upriver, to a spot across from the new depot and served as the first Santa Fe Agent. Davis was named for him.
