July 12, 2001There are as many chiggers and ticks at the Wann Cemetery in June as there was in the Bezion Cemetery in July. Debbie Benson, Sonny Lafon, and Carol Deaton have helped update the records of the Wann-Patrick Cemetery. Wann City Hall and Sharon Finney do have a copy of a name locator map, an alphabetic index, and a burial register by year. Club members Elsie Berg recorded the markers in 1998 and Vivian Brinker recorded the markers in 1999. Thanks to Elsie and Vivian's time consuming efforts the new index was updated with ease. The plat of the Wann Cemetery is listed as the Patrick Cemetery at Wann, Oklahoma. Our records will list this cemetery as the Wann-Patrick Cemetery. The Patrick Cemetery was located at the town of Coon, Indian Territory. On October 13, 1899, the post office name was changed to Wann. It was named for Robert F Wann a prominent local Cherokee. George Washington Patrick's land alotment was located at Wann. He started the cemetery on his property prior to 1870. As the cemetery grew and burials became scattered, George decided to have it surveyed in 1909. The plat was finished and registered at the Nowata courthouse in February 1910. On this plat is recorded that G W Patrick as owner does dedicate to the public forever the streets and alleys as shown herein. One will note that the plat used today has some differnces from the original used for burials. It costs $1.00 for a copy of the plat at the Nowata courthouse.
Mr & Mrs Dero Vinita and daughter Ruth Wood were a great help of locating 7 family members buried at the Taylor Cemetery southwest of Nowata. They do not have markers. Many of the sandstone rocks and markers were removed for mowing purposes leaving the graves unmarked today. We express our appreciation to the Vinita's for their taking time to save history for our county.
Ruth Wood attended our meeting on July 5. Jo Crabtree does genealogy research for others too. She recently found that Sarah Courts was also buried at the Taylor Cemetery. Sarah has no marker.

Tuesday August 7 at 1:30 pm at the Nowata Library is our next meeting. Please join us.
