Emil Sandy, 70, of Owasso, passed away Jan. 2, 1999. He was born March 29,
1919 to Joseph and Carmen DeZayas Sandy in Jacksonville, Fla.
He is survived by his wife Ruth of the home; two daughters, Helen Hall of Arizona and
Francis Santiago of Nevada; step-daughter Virginia Henrich of Tucson, Ariz.
Interment was at Rose Hill Cemetery Jan. 4 directed by Moore Funeral Home.

Carolyn Shahan - Owasso Reporter Jan. 7, 1999
Carolyn L. Shahan, longtime Owasso resident, died Jan. 3, 1999 in Tulsa at
the age of 78. She was born Aug. 6, 1920 in Berryville, Ark., to Thomas and Sedalia Poyner
Morris.
She was reared and educated in Berryville and was graduated from Berryville High School.
IN 1942 she was married to Nolan Wayne Morris
She spent most of her working life as a homemaker. She had been a member of the First
United Methodist Church in Owasso. She enjoyed a variety of pastimes including playing
bridge and traveling. She was also an excellent cook.
Loving family members included two sisters, Virginia Jane Wilson and Marjorie Alice Hanna,
both of Berryville, Ark.; brother-in-law, Calvin Shahan of Tulsa; sister-in-law, Nadine
Ivie of Berryville; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Carol Shahan in 1959; her husband in 1990;
and her son, Wayne Morris Shahan in 1885.
Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at Mowery Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Bill
Diekelman.
Graveside services were held later that day at the Berryville, Ark., Cemetery.
Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Services of Owasso.
J. Dale Sheffield - Owasso Reporter Sept. 3, 1998
J. Dale Sheffield of Owasso, died Aug. 26, 1998 at the age of 71. Dale was
born on Sept. 26, 1926 in Lawn, Texas, to Herbert and Edna (Nunley) Sheffield
He was married to the former Patricia Owens on Dec. 28, 1947 in Oklahoma City. He
graduated from Oklahoma State University.
Dale was a veteran of the armed forces having served his country with the United States
Army. He spent his working years as an engineer for 34 years with McDonnel-Douglas. He was
a member of Bethal Baptist Church, Owasso.
Loving family members include his wife Pat of the home; sons and daughters-in-laws, Scott
and Barbara Sheffield of Tulsa, and Stan and Martha Sheffield of Tulsa seven
grandchildren; mother-in-law, Ione Owens of the home.
Funeral services were held Aug, 28, 1998 at Bethal Baptist Church in Owasso. Officiating
the service was Rev. Jim Wheeler with Lewis Burton assisting.
Serving as escorts were Ted Vancuren, Lee Sanders, Mac Borgna, Jim Archer, Carlton James,
Jarod Sheffield and Jason Sheffield. Honorary escort were Harold Pate, Lloyd McCullough,
Charles Sears and M.C. Rollins.
Interment and committal services followed at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Collinsville. Services

SHEPHARD-- Shirley Louise, 62, of Owasso, died August 23, 1997. Born December 3, 1934
at Cleveland, OK to Sherman and Lucy Storm. Graduate of Cleveland High School. Spent most
of working life as a Bookkeeper. Member Sequoyah Hills Baptist Church, Tulsa. Survivors
include: 5 daughters, Rozena Waldron, Collinsville, Sharon Aley, Patricia Shephard,
Christina Shephard and Phyllis Shephard, all of Owasso; 5 grandchildren; 3 brothers, David
Storm, Camden, ME, Leslie Storm, Sand Springs and Paul Storm, Tulsa; 4 sisters, Ruth

Carolyn Sherwood - Owasso Reporter Dec. 4, 1998
Carolyn A. Sherwood met her Lord and Savior Nov. 27, 1998 after a tragic
one-car accident. She was born March 10, 1952 in Wentzville, Missouri, to Benjamin and
Dorothy Aicher.
She married her longtime high school sweetheart, Richard Sherwood, on Aug. 29, 1964 in
Wellsville, N.Y. They made their home in Tulsa in 1965 before moving to Owasso in 1978.
Carolyn was a devout Christian and devout Lutheran. She and her husband were involved in
numerous organizations at Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso where they were charter members.
She was also involved with Lutheran Brotherhood. She had been employed by Warren Clinic in
Owasso.
Carolyn never met a person with whom she could not get along. Her distinct and special
laugh as well as her gift of giving will be greatly missed by her family, friends and
co-workers.
Loving family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Kerri Sherwood of
Highland Village, Texas, and Paul and Karen Sherwood of Tulsa; two sisters, Helen Krell of
Davis, Calif., and Dorothy Aicher of Titusville, N.J.; cousin, Ruth Reimschessel of
Baltimore, Md.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Richard.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 at Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso.
Serving as officiating minister will be Pastor Bill Diekelman. Committal services and
interment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in Owasso. Arrangements and services were

Cecil Shetters - Owasso

Cecil Cever Sheeters of Owasso passed away Aug. 2, 1999 in Tulsa at the age of 85. He was
born Jan. 5, 1914 in Hogen, Oklahoma, to John and Olivia Mae (Gibbons) Shetters.
He married Lura Riley on Nov. 23, 1938 in Vinita. He worked as a laborer in the Tulsa
street department.
He was a member of the Victory Christian Center in Tulsa. He made his home in Owasso in
February of 1998. Cecil had a variety of pastimes which included walking, reading and
studying his Bible.
His surviving family members include his daughers and sons-in-law, Marie and Ernie Bratton
of Tulsa, Shirely and Roy Bowman of Owasso, and Linda Bennett of Tulsa; sons and
daughers-in-law, Ray and Patricia Shetters of Oologah and Bill and Kathy Shetters of
Tulsa, 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Cecil was preceded in death by a son, Cecil Shetters, in July of
1986; a daugher, Jane Scoggin in November of 1996; a brother, Melvin Shetters; and a
sister, Loraine Shtters.
Funeral Services were held Aug. 5 at Mowery Chapel in Owasso. Officiating the service was
Rev. Jerry Popenhagen. Escorts were Ray Shetters, Jason Bowman, Nathan Buckley, Ernie
Bratton, Roy Bowman and Steve Lindsey.
Services were under the direction of Mowery Funeral Services of Owasso.
George Lee Shouse - Tulsa World April 19, 1998
SHOUSE-- George Lee, 75, a resident of Owasso since 1971, entered into rest on April 16,
1998. He was born April 25, 1922 in Muskogee, OK to Scott D. and Ethel Shouse. He served
honorably in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years including tours to Guadalcanal
with the First Marine Division in WWII and Korea where upon he was injured and received a
Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alila Jean Shouse and is
survived by: Gary and Diane Shouse of Santa Anna, CA, Robert and Anna Shouse of Owasso,
Dennis and Melissa Shouse of Pulaski, TN, Sheila and Buddy Kyle of Owasso and Thomas and
Michelle Shouse of Memphis, TN; also 25 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral
service will be held on April 21, 1998 at 10 a.m. at Saint Henry's Catholic Church in
Owasso. Interment Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Moore's Funeral Home.

July 11, 1953
and they had 3 sons. Mary loved reading, sewing, boating, making friends and she was
especially

Doris Smemoe - Owasso Reporter Jan 21, 1999
Doris May Smemoe, resident of Owasso since 1995, died Jan. 14, 1999 in
Tulsa at the age of 87. She was born Sept. 21, 1911 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Willard and
Hannah Atkinson Neeley.
She was married to Lorenz Richard Smemoe on Nov. 7, 1942 in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her
in death in 1967.
Mrs. Smemoe had attended LDS business college after high school. She had been a member of
the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed a variety of pastimes including traveling,
church, her family and their history.
Loving family members include her son and daughter-in-law Martin and Carol Smemoe of
Owasso, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one sister, Gloria Soderberg of
Salt Lake City, one brother, Edward Neeley of Salt Lake City.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ann Cochran.
Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints in
Owasso. Officiating the service were Bishop Robert Ahlborn and President Kenneth Lower.
Serving as escorts were Christopher Smemoe, Richard Smemoe, Loren Smemoe, Lance Smemoe,
Martin Smemoe, and Lance Chilson.

Ross Smithers, rural resident of Owasso, died Sept 22, 1999 in Tulsa at the age of 82. He
was born April 2, 1917 in White Oak, Oklahoma to Deming and Opal Smithers.
He was a veteran of the armed forces having served his country with the United States Air
Force. He married the former Maxine Gorey on Aug. 18, 1940 in Turley.
He spent most of his working life as a machinist with Rockwell International. He had been
a member of the First United Methodist Church of Owasso.
Loving family members include his wife Maxine of the home, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at the Mowery Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Chris
Tiger serving as officiating minister.

Sandra Rae Starr, former resident of Owasso, died Jan. 23, 1999 in Tulsa at
the age of 49. She was born April 26, 1949 in Claremore to Ray and Henrietta Downey.
She was reared and educated in Owasso and graduated with the Owasso High School Class of
1967. She had taught elementary grades one and three from 1971 to 1993.
Her education continued at UCAT where she earned her BA in psychology in 1992 and also had
worked on her master's at Northeastern State University. In may of 1997 she graduated from
Victory Bible Institute. Along with teaching she had spent some of her working like as an
x-ray technician.
Loving family members include one brother, Johnnie Downey of Owasso; two sisters, Joyce
Nelson of Wagoner and Leona Bays of Tulsa; her mother Henrietta Downey of Owasso; three
nephews, Gary Anderson, Dean Downey and Kenneth Bays; one niece Tammy Wesley.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Wayne Downey and her father, William Ray
Downey.
Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at the Owasso Assembly of God with pastor Arvie Knight
serving as officiating minister. Serving as escorts were Dean Downey, Kenneth Bay, James
Welsey and Danny Nelson. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Owasso. Arrangements

Louise Steiger - Owasso Reporter June 10, 1999
Louise Chappell Steiger, 86, of Owasso, went home to be with the Lord June
1, 1999, closing out a pioneering career in library sciences. She was born Dec. 1, 1912 in
Muskogee to Walter and Harriet Chappell.
She was graduated with the Muskogee Class of 1931 and graduated from Muskogee Junior
College in 1932, after taking library courses and serving in the library. She
continued her education attending Oklahoma Baptist University.
She was married to John Steiger July 4, 1935 in Muskogee. She was assigned to work
for the Tulsa City/County Library on Jan. 18, 1934. The Silver Anniversary History
lists her as one of 33 staff members. During this time she drover the bookmobile to
hospitals and served in the library of First Baptist Church, Tulsa.
A leadership directory of 1987 lists her as having 61 years of volunteer service including
her service in the adult library media center and in the church' s children's
library. She served many years in the library of First Baptist Church in
Bartlesville since moving to the Baptist Retirement Center in Owasso she had worked in the
village library up to a week before her death.
Loving family members include her husband of over 63 years, John C., of the home; three
daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Bill Jones of Dallas, Texas, Janet and Dr. Don
Addison of Lorena, Texas, and Judy and Bill Howard o Oklahoma City; one son and
daughter-in-law, Dr. David and Dr. Natalie Steiger of Burlington, N.C.; six grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held June 4 at the Baptist Retirement Center Chapel in Owasso.
Officiating minister was Dr. Roger Ferguson. Escorts were; Les Reed,
Bill Free, Jack Kelley, Bill Jones, Bill Howard, Don Addison and Bill Terry.
Committal services and interment followed at Graceland Memorial Park Cemetery in

STEIGER-- Louise Chappell, 86, of Owasso, went home to be with the

Jack Sullivan Owasso

Jack Sullivan, longtime Owasso resident, died Sept. 28, 1999 in Tulsa at the age of
71. He was born June 30, 1928 in Labette County, Kansas to Paul and Stella Phillips
Sullivan.
He was educated at Altamont, Kan., and graduated with the Altamont Class of 1947. He
was a veteran of the armed forces having served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1948
to 1952. He married the former Sarah Hanigan June 29, 1951 in Bentonville, Ark. They moved
to Owasso in 1967 and have made their home here since that time.
Jack spent most of his working life as a machinist and tool maker with T.K.
International until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed a variety of pastimes including
boating and fishing and more recently bird watching and building bird houses.
Mr. Sullivan was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Loving family members include his wife Sarah of the home; one daughter and son-in-law,
Linda and Matt Davis of Claremore; three sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Kelly
Sullivan of Tulsa, Mark and Kathy Sullivan of Collinsville, and Scott and Beth Sullivan of
