The two story Cooley Hotel was located at the corner of Main and 76th St. N. (northwest corner) a block from the Sante Fe Depot. The year the hotel was built is unknown, however, it can be assumed that around 1906 would be close. A boardwalk made access to the depot more pleasant. A stairway went up the north side in the second floor. In the foyer of the first floor was a piano where guests would gather, play and sing. A favorite was "Home Sweet Home". Mrs. Ruth Fain McCarty (born 1908) remembers as a young girl hearing the music. Sometime before 1920 Mr. and Mrs. H.K. Doutt became the new proprietors. It is rumored that there was a secret room in the hotel where desperados hid from the law. Mrs. Doutt was the cousin of the late J.E. (Elmo) Harshbarger.
