| The CARNEGIE LIBRARY building was built in 1905 to
replace Shawnee's first public library. It was also the site of the
first school in Shawnee. Extensive damage was caused by a fire in
December 1929 and because of budget shortfalls the original dome and ornate
trim were not replaced when repairs were done during the "great depression"
in the 1930s. The building was used as the Shawnee Public Library
until 1989 when a new library was built on east Main. The Carnegie
Library building is now the home of the District Attorney's office and
a law library. It is situated in Woodland Park, just north of the
Pottawatomie County Court House.
