This building is referred to as the City Auditorium or Civic Center
and was built
at the time Shawnee was competing to become the capital of the
new state of Oklahoma.

The auditorium was built as a Works Progress Adminstration (WPA) project
in 1937.
Approximately 20,000 people attended its inaugural celebration,
which included a parade, games in the park, a banquet and beauty contest.
The Shawnee Senior Citizens Center was later added on the east side
of the building. The auditorium was remodeled in 1991.
