Shawnee Post Office History
Caption reads: "A May 1, 1923, newspaper photo shows
the foundation
of a federal building, still used as the Shawnee post
office, being
constructed at Ninth and Bell. A Masonic Temple
would replace the tire store across the street and
the
Aldridge Hotel would replace the frame house."
The street top left is 9th and the one on the right
is Bell Street.

The first Shawnee Post office was located on Main
Street.
On February 15, 1924 a "new" post office was completed
and occupied
at the corner of 9th and Bell. The Summer
1936 edition of SHAWNEE TODAY
published by the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce included
this
report about the post office:
"Designed in 1914, completed and occupied, February
15, 1924. Cost $110,000.00.
The building waas based and built upon the needs of
1914.
The postal receipts that years, $33, 877;
1917, $44,774;
1924, $74, 415;
1935 $100,160.
Postal Savings in 1917, $5,000--1935 $950,000.
Money order transactions in 1935 totaled $80,000.00.
Today (1936), the office has a total of 31,615 in
its service area.
This is divided as follows:
22,420 by city carriers
2930 by general delievery
6,265 by rural carriers.
Kib H. Warren is the Postmaster."
The 1924 building was remodeled at some time.
