Saint Benedicts Church was started
on North Park Street between 9th and 10th streets.
The parish, was founded in 1896 by the abbot of Sacred
Heart Abbey.
The Sisters of Mercy also started a parochial school
on September 15, 1896.
The current church at Benedict Street and Kickapoo Street
was started in 1906.
Cornerstone was laid on July 29, 1906. A school was built
behind the church in the 1920's.
Later a high school was built. The Sisters of Mercy left
Shawnee in 1974. The school was shut down.
