This is a postcard photo of the building on the south
side of Main street from the corner of Bell Street, looking east.
The Kress Building is the 3rd business from F.W. Woolworth.

The Woolworth Building was built on the site of Shawnee's first post office, a
wooden building constructed for $213.  In 1897 a brick structure replaced
the original wooden building and it became the home of the Kentucky Liquor House.
The Palace Billiard and Pool Hall was upstairs in that structure.  A restaurant and
saloon later took over the ground floor, but they were closed during prohibition
in 1907.  In 1910, the building became Woolworth's Variety Store and operated
as supplier of women's clothing.  Many folks who grew up in and around
Shawnee remember eating lunch at the fountain and refer to it at Woolsworth's.
The building is still standing at the corner of Main & Bell and has
had various occupants since Woolworth's closed.
