Kickapoo and Wallace.
Original building destroyed by a tornado.
The original Jefferson School building was destroyed by a tornado
which struck
Shawnee on March 28, 1924. A news item in THE DAILY OKLAHOMAN
stated that
Glenn Smith, Jefferson school principal, was the "hero of the day."
He
dismissed classes just before the storm tore the top story off the
building.
Jefferson was rebuilt as a one-story structure (see photo below).
In 1934 an auditorium and more classrooms were added, and in 1949,
four more classrooms were
constructed. The north end classrooms and offices were added
in 1968. In 1990 further improvements
were made to the building. During the 1980s Jefferson served
as the second grade center
during the Grade Center phase of the school system.
New building opened in 1934
