Prior to the building of this school in 1920, students of all grades
in Shawnee attended classes in the Central School located
nearby in Woodland Park. In February, 1920, Superintendent
H.G. Fause
asked the school board to build a new Junior High School in Woodland
Park. In October, the old Central School building was sold
to the highest
bidder, E.E. Collier, for $50. The new school was to be built on
the same leased site,
just south of the Fountain Drive. The building was to cost
$250,000. It was to
house a grade school in the west wind of the building and the Jr.
High on the east
end. It was to be fireproof in every respect. The basement
on the ground floor
would contain a room for the retarded, a kindergarten room, a room
for the nurse
and clinic and rooms for the principal's office. An auditorium
seating 500 to 800
people would be in the ground floor, if finances permitted.
The building
would contain built-in lockers and a study hall seating 200-300
pupils.
To the west of the structure, between the two back wings, would
be
an outdoor stage 31' by 100' and raised three feet off the ground.
Open air meetings could be held there and it would be invaluable
to the
benefit of Shawnee citizens. A.C. Davis was the architect
and G.P. Carr
was the contractor.
The corner stone was laid on March 4, 1921. the beautiful old
building still
serves as the administrative building and maintenance headquarters
and
has been leased again from the city, to expire in 2023.

Corner of Union and Highland
This building was built in 1948 as the Shawnee High School,
after fire destroyed the former High School building.
When a new building was erected on Kennedy in 1971, the Jr. High
students were moved into this building at Union & Highland and
the
Jr. High building on the edge of Woodland park was closed and later
became the
site of the school Administration offices.
In ____ the structure of Shawnee schools was changed moving the 9th
graders to the High School and changing the Jr. High to the Middle
School
including grades 6, 7 & 8.
