| The Massey Community, Pittsburg Co. OK was located
southeast of Crowder on the Crowder-Blocker road, and was named for
William Wilson Massey who was Choctaw Indian. Massey Cemetery is located
on land that originally belonged to the Choctaw & Chickasaw Nations.
An act of congress approved June 30, 1913 states that where a cemetery exists within the lands of the Five Civilized Tribes, that land was to be set aside for cemetery purposes, not to exceed 20 acres. In a document filed May 15, 1915, Victor M. Locke Principle Chief of the Choctaw Nation & Douglas H. Johnston Govenor of the Chickasaw, deeded 3 acres of land to the Pittsburg Co. Commissioners for the Massey Cemetery. On Sept. 8, 1964, the Massey Cemetery Association purchased an additional 3 acres from William W. Massey Jr. for cemetery use. The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is that of Lucy Anna Wolfington Crouch, mother-in-law to William W. Massey Sr. Death date Apr. 13, 1889. |
William
Blanchard has photographed some of the gravestones for this cemetery.
This is a partial cemetery listing.
