"William Walter Gibbins was the first young man from Sequoyah County, Oklahoma to die during World War II. To honor his memory, the American Legion Hall was named the "Walter Gibbins Post." It is located near the City Hall in Sallisaw. His name is also inscribed on the monument remembering all casualties for Sequoyah County from WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. This monument is located in front of the Sallisaw Public Library."

From p. 2 of the "News of Our Men" in the Sallisaw newspaper, 6 Aug 1943:

William Walter GIBBINS, USMC, was the first Sallisaw boy to make the supreme sacrifice.  He was killed in action in July, 1943, on New Georgia in the Solomon Islands.  He entered the service May 21, 1942 and was sent to San Diego for training.  Late in January 1943 he was promoted to private first class before going overseas.  Walter was a native of Sallisaw being born here 21 years ago, he had lived here all his life.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John GIBBINS, three brothers and three sisters reside in Sallisaw."
