ROBERT JAMES YELL4 HASTINGS (GEORGE WILLIAM3, WILLIAM C.2, GREEN?1) was
born January 1861 in Gentry, Benton Co, AR, and died
November 28, 1909 in Paden, Okfuskee Co, OK of pneumonia
(Oakdale Cemetery). He married MELISSA CATHERINE SOUTHERLAND May 8, 1881 in Washington Co, AR,
daughter of WILLIAM SOUTHERLAND and RACHEL ELLIS. Notes for ROBERT JAMES YELL HASTINGS: See notes for
grandfather William Hastings regarding Robert James Yell
Hastings in 1870 census. Found in the 1880
Washington Co, Prairie Twp, AR census living with his
brother-in-law and sister Charles and Delilah Adeline
"Ada" (Hastings) Cleveland (family 188) at age
19. On May 8, 1881 in Fayetteville, AR he married
Melissa Catherine Southerland, born April 1862 likely in
the NW corner of Ellis Co, TX. Marriage recorded in
Book F, Page 540, Washington Co, AR. Found in the
1900 Cherokee Indian Territory Census as Family #194 in
Flint Twp, T-11-N, R-23-E, which is just southwest of
present Sallisaw, Sequoyah Co, OK. The family
consisted of Robert and "Milissa" with
daughters Bertha, Pearly (Ida Pearl), and Beatrice (aka
Sessie or Bea) plus sons Oscar and Jesse. Their
oldest daughter Norha Belle married Solomon
"Sol" Atkerson on December 30, 1899 and was
living in the immediate neighborhood apart from the
family. Daughter Bertha
married Timothy Nimrod Stone in about August 1902.
Son Oscar married Timothy Stone's niece Lillie Margaret
Maggie Stone in January 1908. Between mid-1902 and
early 1909 the combined Stone-Hastings clan lived south
of Ft. Smith, Arkansas on either side of the present
AR-OK state line. They were sharecropping for David N.
Nessmith, latter the brother-in-law of Tim-Bertha Stone
and Oscar-Maggie Hastings, who had become an intermarried
Choctaw in 1897. After tiring of working for David,
by early 1909 the combined Stone-Hastings clan moved to
Okemah and Paden in Okfuskee Co, OK. This was
only weeks before Robert died of pneumonia on November
28, 1909 likely at the home of his son-in-law and
daughter, Timothy and Bertha Margaret Stone. Notes for MELISSA CATHERINE SOUTHERLAND: Found in the
1910 Okfuskee Co, Creek Twp (Paden), OK census living
with her son-in-law and daughter Tim and Bertha
(Hastings) Stone (HH 90), and in the 1920 Muskogee Twp,
Muskogee Co, OK census (ED 82, Sheet 13, line 99) living
with her brother-in-law and sister John H. and Sarah Jane
"Sallie" (Southerland) Smith. Although
Melissa Catherine died in March 1922 at Paden, Okfuskee
Co, OK and is buried in the Paden Oakdale Cemetery with
her husband, no actual grave can be found. She died
several years after removal of one leg to her knee for
cancer. Children of ROBERT HASTINGS and MELISSA SOUTHERLAND are:

NORHA BELLE5 HASTINGS (ROBERT JAMES YELL4, GEORGE WILLIAM3, WILLIAM C.2, GREEN?1) was
born January 24, 1883 in Benton Co, AR, and died February
5, 1937 in Sadie, Sequoyah Co, OK (Sallisaw City
Cemetery, Sallisaw, OK). She married SOLOMON W. "SOL" ATKERSON December 30, 1899 in Sallisaw,
Cherokee Nation, son of JEFF ATKERSON and ALICE CAVE. Notes for NORHA BELLE HASTINGS: Note: from
conversations with nephew Virgle Atkerson; Sol and
Norha's grandson FRANKLIN D. ATKERSON in CA;
granddaughter Joan Stachiw of Rockport, TX; niece Pearl
Atkerson Copeland of Sallisaw; and abstract data held by
the family who currently resides on Sol and Norha's
actual Sadie, OK homeplace.. Norha and
Solomon "Sol" Atkerson married on December 30,
1899. [They are listed in the 1900 US Census,
Cherokee Nation, Flint Twp, T-11-N, R-__-E, as Family
#___. Found 1910 and 1920 Sequoyah Co, OK
with sons Jeff and Watie] According to an
interview by phone on April 22, 1999 of Virgle Atkerson
in McAlester, Pittsburg Co, OK (918-423-1743), he knew
both Norha and Sol as a young boy. Virgle is the
oldest living child of Sol's younger brother Jefferson
David Atkerson. Sol was well-know as an imbiber of
the spirits. This may have been a factor in when
and how many children were born by the marriage. He
also had only one arm due to removal from service during
the Spanish-American was of 1898. Sol's father was
Jeff Atkerson, a country "doctor" who was
associated with the Union Army during the Civil
War. Because Jeff was not being paid for his
services, he moved to outside of Birmingham, AL. He
then began giving many of his children names associated
with the Confederate hierarchy, including Jefferson D.
Atkerson. Because of a TB epidemic that killed his
1st wife and many of his children, he torched the family
farm in Alabama to destroy the disease. He
then moved with three surviving children to near
Sallisaw, Cherokee Indian Territory. There he
married Alice Cave, reportedly a 1/2 Cherokee by Blood,
and had three known sons and one daughter. Sol is
considered to be the son of his father's 1st wife in AL,
Leona Abbott. Additional
children traditionally associated with Jeff and Alice
likely were orphans of Jeff's deceased patients taken in
by the couple. These orphans in turn adopted the
Atkerson surname. In Sadie (Sadie's Bottom at the
base of the Wild Horse Mountains), Jeff Atkerson owned a
dry goods store. Sol, who was good with numbers,
operated the store for his father on a 24-hour
basis. Because Sol was a constant imbiber and had
only one arm, the residents actually ran the store as if
it was their own. This included loading and
unloading the supplies when they arrived by boat down the
Arkansas River from Fort Gibson, stocking the store and
signing the register on an honor system. Once a
year the store's patrons would settle their account. After Sol's
father died, Sol inherited the store and continued to
operate it on the same 24-hour, honor basis. Norha
and Sol purchased a tract of land from two minor Cherokee
allottees in 1913 directly across the road from where the
store was located. When Sol died in 1946, his son
Jefferson D. "Big Jeff" Atkerson, who actually
was a small man, took over operation of the store.
"Big Jeff" by that time was married and a
banker in either Sallisaw or Stilwell, OK and began to
curtail the store's operation to day-light hours
only. Coupled with better access to alternate
shopping in the larger City of Sallisaw and Fort Smith,
Arkansas area, this change drove most of the traditional
customers to other outlets for supplies. The
foundation of this store still exists just across the
road from Sol & Norha's original home. Nora died in
1937 from stomach cancer per a letter by niece Lottie
Marie Wilkins. Granddaughter Joan Stachiw indicates
it was an overdose of radiation at a Ft. Smith, AR
hospital rather than the cancer itself that killed
Norha. She is interred in Blk. 8, Lot 19, Space 1
of the Sallisaw City Cemetery. Sol died in 1946 and
is interred next to Nora in Space 2 of the Sallisaw City
Cemetery. Notes for SOLOMON W. Gable in Sallisaw @ 918-775-6495. Through his
mother, he is from the well-known Cherokee Foreman family
that has been in the Sallisaw area for over 150
years. Don said he knew "Sol" fairly
well. Is more than willing to help and is into his
own family genealogy. Mary Ann Thomas
is the mother of Robert James Yell Hastings (latter the
father of Norah and Bertha). Several of Mary Ann's
brothers served in the 1st Cherokee Mounted Volunteers
under Chief Watie during the C.W. In the same 1st
Cherokee company were numerous Foremans that interconnect
with the present Foremans in Sallisaw. More About SOLOMON W. "SOL" ATKERSON: Military

BERTHA MARGARET "BIRD"5 HASTINGS (ROBERT JAMES YELL4, GEORGE WILLIAM3, WILLIAM C.2, GREEN?1) was
born January 27, 1885 in Benton Co, AR, and died August
7, 1956 in San Diego Co, CA of heart failure (Mt. Hope
Cemetery, San Diego). She married TIMOTHY NIMROD STONE Abt. 1902 in near Ft. Smith, AR,
son of JOHN STONE and PRUDENCE KNOWLES. Notes for BERTHA MARGARET "BIRD" HASTINGS: It is said that
every family researcher faces at least one controversy
that requires careful thought and explanation.
Fortunately, the controversy discussed below precedes
this researcher's effort to explain the Hastings and
Stone family tree. Many family
trees well outside but intersecting in some manner with
the Robert James Yell Hastings and Timothy Nimrod Stone
lines have generally excluded Bertha Margaret Hastings'
first child, Lennie Mae. Whether intentional or
unintentional, the effect is to disenfranchise what
presently amounts to four subsequent generations with
well over 100 individuals. Further, there
is now no question that Bertha Hastings' father was
Cherokee by Blood through his mother Mary Ann
Thomas. Although not yet fully confirmed, Bertha's
mother Melissa Catherine Southerland may also have been
Cherokee by Blood. And, Tim Stone may also have a
Cherokee by Blood lineage. Thus, because of the
unique ancestry that seemingly converges on three sides
of this one human being, the exclusion of Lennie Mae
Stone from the Ellis-Southerland, Hastings and Stone
family trees is problematic. And, for all other
Hastings that descend from Mary Ann Thomas as well.
Consequently, the truth of the matter must be balanced
with the immediate family's legitimate right to maintain
its privacy. In 1979, Grace
Stone McGee authored a small privately published book
titled "From Trail of Tears to
Millionaire". This was the anecdotal story of
how Grace's great grandmother Nancy Ann (Murphey) Stone
reportedly survived the Removal of the Cherokee from GA
and TN to Indian Territory in 1839. Grace was the
niece of Timothy and Bertha (Hastings) Stone and was
Lennie's 1st cousin. In that she grew up living
with or in close proximity to the people involved, and
was the devoted caretaker of Tim Stone's mother until her
death in 1923, there is a degree of assumed authority not
available to others, certainly none that are alive today. Her book, in
effect, contains the revelation that Bertha Margaret
Hastings had Lennie out of wedlock prior to her marriage
to Tim Stone. The actual passage with
<clarification> is: "There were some people
there by the name of Hastings. They had a boy named
Oscar and Maggie <Stone> started going with
him. They <the Hastings> had a girl named
Bertha. She was a nice looking girl. She had
been married before and had a little girl named
Lennie. Tim started going with her and they soon
got married..." Problem is, Bertha had only
one husband in her lifetime - Tim Stone. And the
entire Hastings and Stone family knows that. Hence,
the following are this researcher's observations of the
written and historic record including a theory to explain
that which is stated and not stated in Grace's book. By all accounts,
Tim and Bertha married in about August 1902 when Bertha
was only 17 years old. As yet we have not found a
record of a marriage license. At face value, Lennie
was at least one year old when they married. We
know that by the age of seven in 1892 Bertha was living
at various locations with her family within the Illinois
District of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.
Timothy Stone and his family were also in the same
Illinois District by as early as 1889. In the June
1900 Federal Census of the Cherokee Nation, Bertha was
living as an unmarried person with her parents at Sadie
on the southwest back side of the Wild Horse Mountain
about six-miles southwest of Sallisaw. Given the
degree of fact we have been able to discern, Lennie most
likely was born at Sadie, Illinois District, Cherokee
Nation. If a "doctor" was present, it
might very well have been Jeff Atkerson, who became the
father-in-law of Bertha's oldest sister Norha in December
1899. Lennie's
"official" birth date has traditionally been
stated as April 6, 1901, as reflected on her death
certificate. However, Prudence Ann Stone's family
bible has her birth crudely recorded as being
"1896." Allied family researchers
indicate someone other than the immediate Stone family
has previously attributed Lennie's birth as having been
April 6, 1899. Unfortunately, the latter sources
are unable to provide corroborating evidence from another
family bible, birth record, etc. Consequently, this
5-year range in reported date of birth provides fuel for
the controversy. Thus, the relative date of birth
is the first portion of the riddle that must be resolved. By matching
numerous pictures that contain both Lennie and her
youngest sister "Trixie" as well as several 1st
cousins at different ages whose respective birth dates
are not in question, it is clear that a 1901 birth is
implausible. The photos suggest an age difference
of perhaps 3 to 4 years versus 8-15 months required in
accepting the year 1901. The 1896 date in
her grandmother's bible appears to be the least
plausible. In the matched photos Lennie is clearly
NOT 6 to 8 years older than her closest aged sister or a
first cousin born in late 1901. What also makes
1896 hard to accept is that it her mother Bertha would
have been less than 10-1/2 years old when she became
pregnant. While perhaps physically possible, family
structure, protocol and the emotional development level
of a girl barely over the age of 10 calls for immediate
skepticism. By the weight of
the evidence the most plausible date is 1899 despite its
factual shortcoming. Bertha would have been just
over 13 years of age when she became pregnant in late
summer 1898, a more plausible date emotionally and
physically. As previously stated, Bertha was shown
as an unmarried girl living with her parents in
April-June of 1900. But, Lennie was not included in
the household census. For over 100 years, the dot
on the map called Sadie, OK has been settled by a limited
number of very close families. If she was alive at
the time and the enumerator was a complete stranger,
Lennie could have been either removed from the home
temporarily or explained as someone else's child only
there temporarily. Or, if the enumerator knew the
family, clan privacy would prevail. In either case,
the fact that Lennie was not enumerated in her
grandparent's household in the 1900 census is not a
material failure of these observations. Thus, unless and
until an actual birth record can be found we have
ascribed the most plausible birth date for Lennie Mae
Stone to be April 6, 1899. If someone is going to
fool with a date of birth, it generally is only the year
and not all three components (day, month and year).
And, this is exactly what Bertha Margaret Hastings Stone
did for almost 50 years. In a 1964 letter from
Lottie Marie Wilkins to Bernice Schmidt, two of Lennie's
immediate cousins, Lottie states "Aunt Bird
<Bertha> had changed the birth dates of those
children until it was pitiful. All of them were
wrong." The irony is that in the early
mid-1960s Lennie's children tried in earnest to get the
Social Security Administration to accept a birth year
earlier than 1901. Because of the lack of evidence,
the Social Security Administration refused to approve
benefits based on a birth date earlier than April 1901. It is well
accepted that Bertha had Lennie out of wedlock, which is
not the main controversy. Who the father is/was is
THE controversy. Yet, it is more an issue of blood
lineage for historical purposes than for practical
purposes. Lennie was explicitly "adopted"
by Tim Stone as his daughter, raised as a Stone,
identified by him as his daughter and never considered to
be other than a Stone the entirety of her life.
Notwithstanding, in respectful difference to some of
Lennie's living descendants this researcher offers the
following observations of the available historical record
and a theory. An individual by
the name of George, who otherwise is not mentioned
anywhere in the Hastings or Stone family history, has
been asserted as being Lennie's father. Family
history asserts that Tim married Bertha for "honor's
sake" of a good friend. Becuase of his honor,
the respective families were "very relieved"
when Tim and Bertha married. The first question
should be whose family was relieved? The Hastings,
the Stone or both? Relief by the Hastings family
needs no discussion. On the other
hand, if we can count on what we know about Tim's
personal character throughout his life, he would have
married Bertha immediately if he was the father.
Yet, there is only one other direct marriage between Tim
and Bertha's respective families; i.e., Bertha's younger
brother Oscar to Maggie Stone, Tim's niece.
However, this marriage didn't occur until 1908, or six
years after Tim and Bertha. Thus, at the time that
Tim Stone married Bertha why would the Stone family have
been relieved? The assertion that a 30-year old man
married a 17-year old girl for the "honor" of
an errant best friend seems highly implausible. The
more plausible notion is that he did it for honor of the
Stone family itself. The Stone family had no
discernable interest to be "relieved" unless a
family member was the father. Logically, the most
likely candidate was Tim's younger brother George, which
just by coincidence is the historic first name of
Lennie's supposed father. In this context
is the following observation from Prudence Ann Stone's
own bible, copies of which are in the possession of this
researcher. There are two definite
handwritings. One is in ink by one or more writers
knowledgeable of correct spelling, formal lettering and
old-style capitalization. The other is crudely
formed letters using "phonetically"
(misspelled) names and words. Due to a lack of
credible examples, we are not able to deduce whose
"educated" hand wrote in Prudence Ann's
bible. We are told that until the early 1900's
Prudence Ann could not adequately read or write. To
her credit, at some point in the 1900's she purchased a
$0.25 "reader" that taught her the rudiments of
the three Rs. However, i)
despite the marriages of many of her children being
mentioned, when and where Tim married Bertha is not, AND
ii) despite the fact that many of her children who died
before 1910 are mentioned, the date and place of her son
George's death is missing. George reportedly was a
sickly child troubled by stomach problems of some nature
and unable to work for a wage most of his life. In
the summer of 1899, he would have been 24 years
old. Grace's story confirms this by stating
"George never married and always lived with his
mother, as he was never very stout." Grace
also leads us to believe George died between 1900 and
1904. Why would a mother forget to note in her own
bible, either directly or with help, the passing of a son
she so dutifully cared for over a 25 year period? We are
implicitly told that at that time the Stone, Hastings and
associated families were farmers following the cotton
crop. Regardless of gender and age, all able bodied
family worked in the fields. What was sick and
frail George doing? If constantly sick, who was
taking care of him? We are told that "Bird
(Bertha) had a good education." A 13 year old
girl with a "good education" would have been a
logical choice to occasionally care for a frail and ill
young man once she returned from school. If that
was the case, did Bertha come to develop an emotional
attachment to George while exercising this
responsibility? If so, it is highly plausible that
Lennie's father was George Stone. In other words,
has the first name of Lennie's ascribed father (George)
been correct all along while the last name has been a red
herring. Is this what Prudence Ann Stone's bible
left out? Is this why Bertha Margaret (Hastings)
Stone juggled all of her children's birth dates for more
than 50 years? Since we are
speculating, if the good handwriting in Prudence's bible
was by one other than Bertha, Prudence might have had to
explain why George's death and Tim and Bertha's marriage
were not mentioned. If Bertha was the writer, no
explanation was required. Thus, the desire not to
date a marriage relative to Lennie's birth or having to
directly or indirectly reflect who the father was seems
rather obvious. On balance, it
would be grossly inappropriate to eliminate discussion of
one piece of evidence that has given some legitimacy to
another "George" being Lennie's father. The
other George's descendants recently welcomed one of
Lennie's nieces to a family reunion with a desire to
possibly resolving his relationship to Lennie. We
are told that the comparison of family notes was
"inconclusive." Thus, even though
deceased it is unfair to that family to mention a last
name. The evidence is
a business-sized card that has "George" in
large type entwined with a small banner and the name
Bertha. The card includes "Love" in the
top right hand corner and "Remember?" in the
bottom right hand corner. If this was sent to
Bertha as a reminder of things past, why does it still
exist? Why was it left available for the family,
immediate or otherwise, to find to raise questions
about. Unless there is other compelling evidence,
which there appears to be none, at face value the card
implies a level of friendship existed but does not
explicitly mean mutual parenthood. We also
understand that Lennie, who always lived in eastern
Oklahoma, may have met the purported "George"
under the assumption that they were father and
daughter. What conversation transpired is
unknown. However, we are told this meeting occurred
after Lennie's parents were deceased. Thus, we do
not know whether the meeting was the result of Tim and/or
Bertha's explicit permission or whether George acted
entirely on his own under an assumption, real or
otherwise, that he was Lennie's father. In short, the
truth of the matter is a secret and since the
participants themselves, actual or otherwise, are
deceased the truth likely will remain a secret. No
matter who Lennie's father was, she was explicitly
"adopted" by Tim Stone and considered by him to
be his daughter, raised as a Stone and never considered
other than a Stone by her extended family all of her
life. Whatever weight
the above observations and theory merit, it is very
plausible that Lennie Mae was a Stone by blood the day
she was born. Notes for TIMOTHY NIMROD STONE: Tim's 1958 death
certificate in San Diego, CA first states that he was
born in 1871 then was amended by affidavit 3 months later
to be 1873. We have used the 1872 date shown in his
mother's family bible as well as her affidavits regarding
her Widow's Pension application during the 1890s. Tim was tall and
lanky and described by numerous relatives as having been
a true "gentleman." He was most often
seen in public wearing a large brimmed western hat. Children of BERTHA HASTINGS and TIMOTHY STONE are:

and died January 12, 1972 in National City, San Diego Co,
CA. She married NEWTON JASPER "TED?" CAMPBELL July 25, 1920 in Wetumka, Hughes
Co, OK, son of EDWIN CAMPBELL and AMANDA ATKINSON. Notes for SUSAN MAE "LILLIAN" HASTINGS: We have two
separate photographs of Susie and Newton's wedding day in
1920. One is of the two families in an outside
alcove of the Church before the ceremony as Susan is not
yet in wedding attire. We believe this photo
includes seated directly in front of her: Uncle William A.
Cartmell, the oldest son of George W. Cartmell and
Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Ellis, former the 1st
cousin of Melissa Catherine Southerland who is standing
between the bride and groom. We believe sitting
immediately to William A. Cartmell's right in front of
Melissa is Elizabeth "Betty" Jane (Ellis)
Cartmell herself, the oldest sister of Melissa's deceased
mother Rachel Margaret (Ellis) Southerland, and at the
time Susie's oldest living great Aunt. We believe these
two individuals are important since both William and his
mother resided in Ellis Co, TX at the same time that
Melissa and her parents did prior to the Civil War.
Also, in 1870 they were residing in Benton Co, AR at the
same time as Melissa Catherine. In 1920 Betty
Cartmell was 93 years old (died in 1925) and this picture
reflects her age. However, it also reflects that at
93 she had a definite Native American appearance and
straight black hair. Her son William does
also. Rachel Margaret (Ellis) Southerland is said
to have been very Cherokee in appearance and photos of
her four daughters, including Melissa Catherine, further
reflect a Native American appearance. The second photo
is of Susan, her mother Melissa and William Cartmell
after the ceremony, as Susan was now in her wedding
attire. More About NEWTON JASPER "TED?" CAMPBELL: Other Facts: CA

in Rockport, TX, neither her father or Watie had birth
certificates. Her grandfather Sol had the midas
touch, could own anything then lose it during a drinking
binge. Norha was in a Fort Smith, AR hospital at
the time of her death with Jeff attributing her death to
the cancer radiation treatments rather than cancer
itself. More About BERNICE L. (ATKERSON): Other Facts: OK

confusion regarding whether Dorothea was married perhaps
upwards of three times and who was the father of her
children. According to her father's death
certificate in CA as well as his obit, she was identified
as the informant named Dorothy Warner while living
virtually next door. We do know by relatives that
she was at least married to a Wright and may first have
been married to a John Coch. Ernest Allen

indicates Dorothea died on September 13, 1993. As

Co, OK, son of WILLIAM LEWIS and LYDIA WALLS. She married (2) ROBERT VICTOR WILKINS September 29, 1945 in Oswego,
Labette Co, KS, son of EDWARD WILKINS and ROSA CONLEY. Notes for LOTTIE MARIE WILLIAMS: Until the time
of her death, Lottie Marie was heavily involved in
genealogical research regarding her family and
ancestors. What initially was simply gathering
family stories from the immediate past generation
mushroomed to a passionate search for the truth upwards
of 175 years deep. Her research spanning 20 years,
and done by old fashion letter writing, was thought to
have been lost. Fortunately, almost all of her
material has recently been found in the possession of a
close relative. She is assisting in an effort to
make the James and Sarah (Riggs) Ellis, the George and
Delilah Hastings, the William Henry and Rachel Margaret
(Ellis) Southerland, Jr., and the Thomas B.S. and Nancy
Ann (Murphey) Stone "tree" known, understood
and whole for the first time in their respective
histories. Notes for ERNEST ALLEN LEWIS, SR: Prior to WW II,
Ernest worked in the coal "strip" mines east
and northeast of Henryetta, OK. He and Lottie Marie
divorced in about 1943. After WW II he lived on
Slausen Boulevard in the Watts section of south Los
Angeles, CA. He made car springs for older autos
and reportedly had a very good business. Because of
his standing in the local community, the devastation that
resulted from racial disturbances in Watts during the
1960s bypassed his place of business. He died at
Sawtelle Veterans Hospital in West Los Angeles, was first
buried in LA then removed and re-interred in Cody, WY. Child of LOTTIE WILLIAMS and ERNEST LEWIS is:
