4. John Applegate, born c1630; died about 1712 in Fairfield,
Conn. He married
Avis Goulding, who died in Fairfield, Conn. on Feb. 3, 1717, aged
c80 years. In
1650, he is listed among the list of residents of Gravesend, Long
Island and in
1655 as of Thompson's Long Island. In 1661, he is charged with
smuggling in New
Amsterdam, but that charge was not sustained later. In 1663, he
is a freeholder
of Oyster Bay, Long island. He bought land a house in Fairfield,
Conn. about
1663 from Mary Macock; and purchased land from Samuel Forman in
1667 and John
Pell in 1671. There are records of John purchasing lots in
Fairfield, Conn. In
1696, Avis sold his property in Gravesend to her brother, Joseph
Goulding. John
Williams and Theophilus Hull of Fairfield conveyed on Jan. 18,
1704 to John
Applegate one half of the long lot formerly belonging to Samuel
Ward, deceased.
John's will was dated Nov. 13, 1704 and mentions wife Avis,
Exec'x; sons of
brother, Thomas Applegate, with Avis to receive all of his estate
and at her
death to go to his brother, Thomas's sons. The will was probated
on Jan. 24,
1712 with John Meredith of Newport, Rhode Island, one of the
witnesses,
swearing that John Applegate was of sound mind. An inventory had
previously
made on Dec. 25, 1712 and put a value of 921.07.10. On Jan. 20,
1715, John
Williams conveyed land to Avis Applegate for 40 pounds, part of a
debt of over
53 pounds in silver money which he owed to John Applegate, dec'd.
Avis on Feb.
2, 1716, "for the love and respect which I bear unto John
Williams of Fairfield
and to his children", reconveyed the house and lot to him
and his children,
Elizabeth, Rebecca, Abiah, and Mary.(History and Genealogy of the
Families of
Old Fairfield). Following, Avis' death, her estate was
administered by her
nephew, Joseph Applegate. Samuel Barlow and Moses Ward made an
inventory of the
estate on Feb. 5, 1716/17 and reported, "nothing left after
paying debts". On
May 1, 1716/17, the Court of Probate held in Fairfield, CN ruled
that the
"clear estate of John Applegate was 116.19.1 pounds after
allowance of 5 pounds
to Joseph Applegate for "for his work of
Administration" and court costs of
0.12.0. and the court authorized Joseph Applegate to distribute
the estate in
equal portions to the six sons of John's brother, Thomas. John
and Avis
apparently had no children.

Bartholomew Applegate, born c1620; died probably in the 1690's.
He was
probably the oldest child. He married in Oct 1650 to Hannah
Patrick of
Gravesend, daughter of Capt. Daniel Patrick (killed in Stamford,

Feacke ). In
1650, Bartholomew completed with William Wilkins, a tide mill on
Strom Kiln.
Over the next 25 years, Bartholomew's name appears from time to
time in the
records of Gravesend(Stillwell, p.3). One of these records
indicated that his
wife Hannah and child were apparently abducted by the Indians and
were ransomed
with red cloth. On Mar. 7, 1674, Bartholomew Applegate (
Appelgadt ), Thomas
Applegate ( Bartholomew's brother ), and Richard Sadler were
granted permission
to purchase lands from the Indians, near the Neversinks, in East
Jersey.
However, this was contested in April by John Bowne and Richard
Hartshorne who
filed notice that the grant was an infringement of their patent.
The Council
ordered them to prove their claim with six months, but by that
time, the
English had taken over the country and it was necesary to reapply
for a new
warrent from those in power. In 1684, Bartholomew was in Sussex
Co., Delaware
and was cited as delinquent in working on the hiways(Some Records
of Sussex
Co., Delaware. C.H.S. Turner. Philadelphia, Allan, Land, and
Scott. 1909.
