Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co, 1906, reprint 1972. McLEAN, JOHN, b. Islay, Scot. He came to Canada with his wife and family in 1834. He bought 200 acres, lot 6, con. 9, Erin Tp., from the Canada Co. for 87 pounds, 10 s., taking his deed in 1837, from the Canada Company's agents at Toronto, Hon. William Allan and Thomas Mercer Jones. His sons all worked together and helped to clear up the homestead. He was an Elder in the White Church, Caledon West, and in politics a Reformer. He m. Mary McLachlan. Issue: Archibald, Donald, Angus, John, Mrs. Alexander Gray, York Tp., and Mrs. John Gillies, Eramosa Tp. Archibald McLean, b. Islay, Scot., 1814, d. 1890, age 76. He was a weaver by trade, and was 20 years old when he came to Canada. For a few seasons he worked at Caledon Mountain, and earned money to help pay for the homestead. He received as his share of the homestead the east half of lot6, con. 9, Erin Tp. He was a Presbyterian and a Reformer, and was a Trustee of S.S. No. 1. He m. Ann, dau. of Alexander Eachern, of Caledon. Issue: John, Mrs. J. H. Thompson, Erin; Christina (d.), Alexander, with Archibald, in Erin; and Angus, on the homestead, all of whom were b. on the east half of lot 6, con. 9. John, b. on the east half of lot 6, con. 9, in 1842, attended S.S. No. 1, Erin Twp. In 1870 he started farming the 100 acres, east half lot 1, con. 8 of Erin Tp, where he carries on mixed farming. He has never sought municipal office, but takes an active part in church work. He has been Elder of Ballinafad Presbyterian Church for 13 years, also Supt. of the Sunday School for that time. He m. Sarah A., dau. of the late William McEneny, Esquesing Tp. Angus, son of John McLean, has a grandson, Hector McLean, who is a Presbyterian missionary at Yun-nan, China. Donald came to Canada with his family in 1834, and d. about 1872, age 73. About 1840 he purchased 100 acres, east half lot 4, con. 6, Erin, upon which there was about half an acre cleared, and here made a house for himself. He did not hold office of any kind; was a Presbyterian attending White Church, Caledon, and in politics a Liberal. In early days he used to go Esquesing for grist. He m. in Scot., Christina McLachlan, who d. 1900, age 99. Issue: Mary (d.), Mrs. John McDougall, Esquesing; John (d. 24), Mrs. Dugald McMillan, Erin; Mrs. Wm. Lusby, Mich.; Margaret (d.), Angus (d.), Donald, on the homestead; Christina (d.), and Duncan. Duncan, b. on the homestead in Erin in 1854, attended S.S. No. 4. He has always been engaged in farming, and about 1881 purchased from the late Malcolm McLachlan 100 acres west half lot 3, con. 11, Erin, where he has since carried on mixed farming, raising good beef cattle. He was a Trustee of S.S. No. 1, for three years, but never cared for municiple office. He took an active interest in affairs of the Liberal party, and has quite often been a member of local committees. In religion he is a Presbyterian. He m. Ellen Moore, of Orangeville. Issue: Sadie M.
