William Wansbrough, Erin Twp, Wellington Co, Ontario >From the "Biographical sketches" Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario, compiled, drawn and published from personal examinations and surveys. Toronto: Historical Atlas Publishing Co, 1906, reprint 1972. WANSBROUGH, WILLIAM SR. (d.).This respected old citizen, was a soldier in the British Army, served in the Peninsular wars, and was at the Battle of Waterloo. He d. at the age of 101, while his wife, whose maiden name was Rebecca Holmes, and was of Irish descent, lived to the age of 92. He came to Canada in 1835, and set. in Caledon Tp., in Alton, where he retired on his pension. Issue: Richard, George and Edward, in the U.S.; Robert, retired in Orangeville, Thomas, (d. 1882), in Erin Tp; Mrs. James Davis (d. in Erin Tp.); Mrs. James Lang, Erin Twp.; Mrs. Wm. Dickson, Grand Valley, and William Jr. William Jr., was b. in Cork Co., Ire., in 1822, and came to Canada in 1835, with his parents. He located in Erin Tp., lot 26, con 11, where he purchased 150 acres, when he was 21 years old. He cleared this farm, and later sold it and purchased lot 28, con. 10, and there lived until 1876. Issue: Mrs. John Barnes, in Erin; William, Port Hope; Mrs. Tozer, Toronto; Robert, in Erin; Thomas, in Fergus; Richard, in Detroit; Mrs. Chas Becker, in B.C.; Mrs. R.B. McRoberts, in Toronto; Mrs. Louis Laird, Norval. Of these, Thomas was b. in Erin, and later learned the blacksmith's trade. He entered into a partnership in this line with A. Currie, Hillsburg, but later engaged in the railroad business, being operator of the C.P.R., for seven years at Flesherton. In 1898, he retired to Fergus, where he has since resided. He is a member of the Presbyterian church, and in politics a Liberal. He m. Annie, fourth dau. of the late Alex. Barnet, pioneer of West Garafaxa, mentioned elsewhere in this work. Issue: Ewart, ledger keeper in Union Bank, Hastings; Roy, assistant at C.P.R. He died at the age of 94, 1763-1857. He settled in Erin Tp. near the Caledon Tp. line, later retiring to Alton. His son William was born in Co. Westmeath, the family embarking for Canada from Co. Cork."
