Catherine Thomson McAlpine, Obituary, Erin Twp, Wellington Co., Ontario Contributed by S. Massey, BluePrevia@aol.com McAlpine, Catherine Thomson*, the beloved wife of Mr. Dugald McAlpine, of the 12th Con., Elderslie, passed into her rest on Nov. 15th, 1912. Our sister McAlpine was born Oct 15th, 1839 in Kintire, Scotland, and at the age of eight years she, with her mother and the rest of the family, three sons and three daughters, came to Canada and settled in Erin Tp. Some years later she moved to Elderslie Tp. with her brother and was converted and baptized under the ministry of Rev. Neil Sinclair, in the Elora Road Baptist Church, two and a half miles north of Paisley, in the early years of her life. On Jan. 2nd, 1868, she was united in marriage to Dugald McAlpine, her now sorrowing husband. In 1869, they settled in Elderslie, on the farm from which she passed away, and joined the Williscroft Baptist Church. She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband, four sons and three daughters: Edward, of Granite Falls, Wash.; Archie, of Spokane, Wash.; Alexander, of Nokomis, Sask.; Clarence at home. Her son, John, died at the home just sixteen months before his mother. The daughters are Kate, Mrs. Kennedy, of Port Arthur; Lizzie, Mrs. McLachlan, of Calgary; Mary, Mrs. Graham, of Aurora, Minnesota. The funeral was a large one; two sons were home, Alex and Archie, and one daughter. On Sunday after the funeral, the pastor, Rev. E.J. McEwen, preached the funeral sermon, taken from 1 Thes. 4:14 "The Believer's Glorious Hope." The large gathering on both occasions was a mark of respect. Rev. John MacNeill, B.A., and A.T. MacNeill, B.A., nephews of our departed sister, were present. E.J.M. - From Canadian Baptist, Dec 5th, 1912. *Spelling might have been Thompson as it looks like someone removed the "p" from Catherine's maiden name. However, other family genealogies also list her name as "Thomson."
