1837 - district was partially surveyed by Lewis Burwell of Brantford
1851 - (Dr.) William McPherson was the first settler in the area and built the first shanty where the War Memorial stands today
1854-55 - land survey was completed by Wm. McPhillips P.L.S. of Richmond Hill
1854 - next settlers in town were Mrs. George Joyce and her two sons George and Richard who named the small village Joyce's Corners, Richard Ponsford, Edmund Furze, Robert Erskine, Sam Stuckey and John Luxton
1860 - first post office and school were opened
