Chronology:

1820 - August 7,1820 Ezekiel Benson (a land surveyor) is issued the first land patent for Orangeville
1844 - Orange Lawrence (the acknowledged founder of Orangeville) purchases the east 100 acres from George W. Griggs. Orange Lawrence went on to build a primitive saw-mill on the bank of the stream south of East Broadway. Historical sketch from the Orangeville Sun
1863 - Orangeville becomes a village
1873 - An act is passed to incorporate Orangeville as a town on January 1, 1874
1879 - Orangeville is selected as the county seat for the newly made county of Dufferin
