Grey County GenWeb Obituaries from the Past

MEAFORD EXPRESS (Dec. 1, 1921) - One of Meaford's earliest settlers has just passed away in the person of George Chantler. Mr. Chantler was born in Sussex, England, in 1826, coming to Meaford with his father about the year 1841, where he was active in all the early life of the town; clearing the town site, building the first wharves and then in flour milling.
He left Meaford at the age of 32 and for many years was resident in the United States and Western Canada, returning here some ten years ago but leaving again in June of 1920 to live with his son, Vincent, in Oakland, Cal., where he died on December 1st, at the advanced age of 95.
