Grey County GenWeb Obituaries from the Past
MEAFORD EXPRESS (March 4, 1908) - The death of Mr. Charles Cleland yesterday afternoon came as a surprise, when his recovery from the operation he had undergone seemed assured. Mr. Cleland had been suffering from pneumonia and when complications developed Dr. Heming, the family physician, advised the family of the critical state of the patient and his son, Dr. Frederick Cleland of New York was wired for. He arrived on a special train about 1 a.m. On Monday accompanied by Professor Staff of Toronto University. A consultation decided on an operation which was carried out, with the assistance of Dr. McPhedran of Toronto, and from which the patient rallied for a time, but relapsed and passed away about 3 p.m. on Wednesday. A genuine old-time Liberal, Mr. Cleland represented North Grey in the Legislature from 1890 to 1898 under Sir Oliver Mowat. In municipal affairs he was mayor of Meaford for three years and occupied other positions in the council at various times.
