MEAFORD EXPRESS, Oct 20, 1911 - After a life well spent Mr. Frank Eaton, closed his eyes to this world at the residence of his only daughter, Miss M. Beckett, 9th line, St. Vincent, on Thursday evening, October 20, at the ripe old age of 83 years and 7 months. Deceased had been in failing health for some time past and the end was not altogether unexpected although everything was done by his family and friends. By the removal of this venerable old gentleman the community loses one of its first settlers and a man who reared as clever and as successful a family as ever left the borders of a home circle.
The subject of this sketch was born in Ireland and came to Canada with his parents when a mere child. They first settled in Toronto Township and moved to Euphrasia when 15 years of age, where in his younger days, he experienced many of the hardships known only to the pioneer settlers. In September, 1848, deceased was married to Miss Frances Ball, also of Euphrasia, and together they worked early and late until they made an impression on the goddess of fortune and became more favorably located and more well-to-do. Toiling in the thickest of forest and accepting the crude mode of living of those days they soon made their presence felt in the community and won their way into the hearts of a large acquaintance. The union was blessed by eight children, 7 boys and and one girl who with his surviving widow of eighty-three years, mourn the loss of a loving father and faithful husband.
Two years ago last month this aged couple celebrated their 60th anniversary of the wedding and in the midst of their eight children, thirty-eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, were the recipients of many warm and congratulatory evidences of their worth and esteem. For twenty-two years they were residents of our town, widely known, generously respected and much beloved.
In religion the late Mr. Eaton was a Methodist and connected himself with that body prior to his marriage in 1848. He was a tower of strength to the church and always contributed willingly to a worthy cause.
