MEAFORD EXPRESS (Mar. 1921) - The death of William Gibson on Saturday morning of last week removed another of the early settlers in this locality, at the advanced age of 81 years and 6 months. Deceased was born in Yorkshire, England, where his grandfather, John Gibson, was a tenant of 1000 acres, near Darlington, and his father, Wm. Gibson, was also a land tenant of Towler Hill Farm on the Yorkshire side of the river which divides Yorkshire from Durham opposite Barnard Castle. In 1841 they left England for Canada and spent six weeks in making the ocean voyage. Reaching the St. Lawrence their boat, the Durham had to be towed up the river by oxen. The family took up their residence in Durham County, known as the Newcastle settlement, where the subject of this sketch resided until his marriage to Miss Ann Fligg, daughter of the late Benjamin Fligg. For about six years, the young couple resided at Mitchell in Huron County, after which they moved to St. Vincent and settled on the ninth line at Oxmead, where they remained a number of years. Before moving to Meaford 41 years ago and taking up their residence on St. Vincent street, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson spent a couple of years on 15 and 16 sideroad. For nearly half a century Mr. and Mrs. Gibson were respected and highly esteemed residents of the town, and welded many ties of friendship that were broken through the death of his wife some two years ago.
The late Mr. Gibson served the town for a number of years as Councillor and was a man of strict integrity and good judgement. In politics he was a staunch Conservative and in religion a member of the Anglican Church, where his punctuality at worship and consistency in living was an example to his family and friends. Out of a family of eight children, six survive as follows: Albert E. and Frank Gibson, Meaford; Mrs. Wm. Curry, Owen Sound; Mrs. Thos. Curry, Goring; Mrs. Wm. Booker, town, and Miss Nellie at home. One sister, Mrs. Colwell, of Huntsville, also survives.
