H. HELSTROP DIES:
LONG IN BUSINESS
ONE OF MEAFORD'S OLDEST
BUSINESS MEN -- CAME HERE
74 YEARS AGO
MEAFORD EXPRESS (1933) - One of Meaford's most respected and oldest business men died Saturday evening in the person of Mr. Henry Helstrop. Mr. Helstrop had been ill for some time. He was in his 76th year and had been a resident of Meaford for 72 years. He was born in Maple and came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Helstrop to Meaford when four years of age. The name Helstrop has for more than 70 years been associated with Meaford business. Mr. Robert Helstrop was a furniture maker and carried on in the furniture business for years. In that he was succeeded by his son, a brother of Henry Helstrop.
   Mr. Helstrop learned the harness making with the late Hector McDonald and went into the harness and traveling goods business for himself in 1886. He had carried on continuously since that time and was widely known throughout this district as a man of honor and integrity. Mr. Helstrop was a member of the Anglican Church and one of the oldest members of Christ Church here. He was the oldest member of Pythagoras Lodge A.F. And A.M. Although he never held office, he was keenly interested in municipal affairs, and well informed. He was a friendly man, in whom every one placed the utmost confidence and in his death scores lose a staunch and true friend. He is survived by his widow, formerly Adelaide Elkerton, one son Darrell, of Toronto, two daughters, Miss Adelaide, at home and Mrs. Randle of Brampton, and two sisters, Miss Emma Helstrop and Mrs. Robert Almond of Meaford.
   The funeral took place Monday with the service in the Anglican Church, Rev. T.D. Painting conducted the services, and there were also Masonic services by the member of Pythagoras Lodge A.M. and F.M.
