Death of John Mackenzie
April 28th 1907
One of the earliest settlers of the township of Sarawak, Mr. John Mackenzie clerk of the township for many years, passed away at his home at Presque Isle Sunday morning last. Since the death of his wife, which occurred on New Years Day he has been in very poor health from an internal trouble and had been seldom out of the house and then only in the performance of his official duties. He gradually grew weaker and the end came as above stated on Sunday morning. Deceased was 70 years of age and came from near Rockford in the county of Wellington in 1800's and settled in Presque Isle where he has since resided. He soon became one of the leading men in the community and was reeve of the township of Sarawak for a number of years before receiving the appointment of clerk which latter office he filled in a capable manner for many years. He also held the office of lighthouse keeper, postmaster, and agent of the Great North western Telegraph Co. He leaves a family of six children surviving; four daughters and two son's .They are Mrs. C Agar, Mrs. W H Horne, misses Maggie and Kate, John and Hugh .The last four named living in Presque Isle. The funeral takes place this (Tuesday) afternoon, leaving his late residence at one o'clock and interment will be made in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Sarawak
