OLD WESLEYAN METHODIST CEMETERY

FRANKFORD

Sidney Township

Hastings County

This cemetery has received the benefit of the study and research of Angela and Peter Johnson. They have created a harmony of two transcriptions and included notes from their own research to supplement these transcriptions. I have received permission from them through Bob Phillips who has helped me considerably in preparing this material for posting. Because of formatting limitations I will not be able to present the material in exactly the same form as the Johnson manuscript but will include the introduction and all of the notes.

Peter and Angela would like to hear from anyone who is researching ancestors from this cemetery who may be able to add to their research. Please email them by clicking on their names, above.

Note: [T] represents the Town Transcription. [W] represents the Wanamaker Trancription.

Johnson's notes occur in the indents after the transcription record.

Location: An old paper in the Frankford Town Office gives the location as, "Part Block 22, East Side of Wellington St."

Introduction:

If a cemetery can be said to have had bad luck, this one qualifies. For decades it was neglected shamefully. The Methodist heritage was almost lost and the modern Protestant Cemetery actually began as the Anglican Cemetery. The Methodist stones were either carried off or buried at the site, leaving an unadorned lawn. Finally about 1984 the Frankford Town Council put up a sign, metal plaque, and rescued three stones, but they called the result, "The Quakers Cemetery". It added insult to injury, if a cliche may be pardoned.

Two transcriptions survive. One I refer to as "The Town Transcription", as it is an anonymous transcription located in the Frankford Town Office. The other is "The Wanamaker Transcription" done by Mildred and C. Loral R. Wanamaker U.E. about 1965, when the cemetery was in terrible shape. Not surprisingly the later Wanamaker Transcription contains fewer names, but it does add a few not in the earlier one. This combined transcription lists both sources with a "W" indicating the Wanamaker Transcription and a "T" for the Town Transcription. Occasionally the two transcriptions vary on dates and initials, (and with first names once or twice), so both versions are listed. I suspect many of the earliest dates in the Town Transcription are wrong. A detailed study of the Sidney Township Census Records from 1851 onwards would clear up some of the debatable names and dates, but such a time-consuming project is beyond the present scope of this project. Additional information appears in the "Comments" section where such information was available.

The "Quakers Cemetery" sign and plaque are controversial. To date I've found no evidence that this was a Quaker Cemetery. Frankford isn't Bloomfield! Even the town history (Lewis, Walter and Turner, Lynne. By Bridge and Mill: A History of the Village of Frankford. Kingston: Brown & Martin Ltd., 1979) is silent on the Quakers, but has numerous references to the Wesleyan Methodists, whose church dates from the 1850's. Very few stones pre-date the building of the Methodist Church on the site, and as noted earlier, some of the earliest transcription dates are suspect.

A check of the Sidney Township Census Records for the families I'm most familiar with, (MAYBEE, ROSE, WALT, MARSH, WANNAMAKER, PHILLIPS, and BELL), reveals no Quakers, only the Protestant denominations one would logically expect. Old Harmon ROSE would roll over in his grave if he knew his resting place in the Methodist Cemetery was now promoted as "The Quakers Cemetery". Even the punctuation falls flat! The Town Council gets full marks for attempting to do something at the long-neglected site, but less than a passing grade for historical accuracy.

A few remarks should be said about the old Wesleyan Methodist Church. Undoubtedly a handsome building when it was built in the 1850's, the union of the Episcopal and Wesleyan Methodists ain the 1880's marked the beginning of the end for it and the cemetery. The newly combined Methodist congregations opted for using the newer Episcopal Methodist Church on Mill Street. Eventually the old Church was converted into apartments, its handsome Gothic windows bricked in, and decline resulted. Given additions to the back, one has to look closely to find the form of the old Church. With the decline of the Church, the cemetery was let go too, Protestants changing more and more to Holy Trinity Cemetery across the Trent River.

Thanks to those in the Town Office who made the Town Transcription available. Special thanks to the Wanamakers for sharing their transcription, and other information.

Genealogists are advised to check other local cemeteries, especially Holy Trinity Cemetery, Frankford, and Stockdale Cemetery in neighbouring Murray Township.
