Obituary of Thomas Scott Hamilton of Colborne Township died June 1900From the Goderich Star of June 15th 1900On Tuesday, June 5th, after an illness of three weeks duration, not withstanding the attentions of one of Huron's most skilled physicains and the attentions of the family unremittingly, intelligently and lovingly bestowed, there passed to the Great Beyond, Mr. Thos. Hamilton, one of Colborne Township Pioneers at the advanced age of seventy-six years and three months. Being a man of uncommon good physique, and one who nearly always enjoyed the best of health, his death after so short an illness came as a surprise to his large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was kindly in all relationships, whether as father, husband, friend or neighbor, punctual in business matters, always ready to extend practical sympathy and possessing in a rare degree the esteem of his fellows, was born in the County of Fermanagh, Ireland, emigrating from there in 1839 with his parents and other members of the family, they settled in Goderich Twp He remained at the parental abode for 8 years after his arrival in Canada, and then moved to Colborne and began to hew a home for himself out of the great Canadian Forest, bearing all the privations of a pioneer's life with patience and fortitude, and many years ago rejoiced in reaching the goal of his ambition - a good farm free of debt. In 1866, he married Miss Jane Elizabeth McCann, who for 44 years proved an efficient helpmate, and now mourns his departure with five sons - Thos, assessor of Colborne Twp.; George, blacksmith in the Klondike; Joseph, veterinary surgeon Goderich; Benson, medical student, Trinity College, Toronto; David at home - and six daughters. Mrs. R.A. Sprung, Goderich; Mrs. W. Plunkett, Mrs. A. Goldthorpe, Millie, Lena, and Grace. Politically he was an unwavering Conservative, an enthusiastic admirer of the great Conservative chieftain and while strong and unyielding in his political convictions, he was invariably kind to his political appointments. The funeral on June 7th was one of the largest ever seen in Colborne. His remains were borne to their last resting place in Colborne Cemetery by his sons, Thomas, Benson, Joseph, and David, his sons-in-law Wm. Puckett and Thos. Robertson. Submitter Janice Hamilton Howe Durham, North Carolina Note: This obit is the father of Dr. Benson Hamilton (my grandfather). She also submits obits for her grandmother Ella Ross Hamilton wife of Benson Hillyard Hamilton, as well as her father John Ross and her mother Jane Robson Ross. |
