Obituary Oliver John Thompson of Goderich killed in Orillia, Simcoe County November 1905 From the Goderich Star Nov 10, 1905 THOMPSON-The many friends of the family and associates and former school mates of Oliver John Thompson, a young man living with his parents on Hincks street, were shocked to hear on Saturday evening that he had been accidentally killed at Orillia, that afternoon. The train on which he was a fireman had just pulled in and cut off some cars to allow passage of the crossing when the deceased went beneath the engine to look at the ash pan and the slackening of the train when the cut was made caused the engine to pull back a few feet, in which the draw barstruck him on the head with such force as to cause instant death by breaking his neck. The remains were brought to town on Monday, and the funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon from the family residence, Hincks Street. Service at the house was performed by Rev. Mr. Graham and at the grave by Rev. Mr. Hazen. The deceased was a memeber of the Locomotive Firemans Brotherhood, of whom 9 were present at the funeral as follows, six acting as pall bearers, and three as flower bearers:Frank Heard, A. Little, E. McMillion, C. Connell, F. Wisdom, F. Bell, R. Hargraves all from Allendale and Harry Paton, Frank Barber and A. C. Saults of Stratford. Deceased was also a member of the I. O. F. and the brethren of Court Goderich attended the funeral in body. That he was an exemplary and well beloved young man was evidenced by the presence of associates from the Firemans Brotherhood and thier kindly and sorrowful testimony to his worth. Among the floral tokens were a beautiful "Gates Ajar" from the B. O. F. and a wreath from the Presbyterian church at Allendale of which he was a member. He carried $2, 225 insurance in the railway Societies and $500 in the Foresters. There was a very large attendance of friends at the house and a long line of carriages followed to the cemetery. Some beautiful floral emblems were laid on the casket by relatives friends and societies of which the deceased was a member, and much sympathy was expressed for the parents and other relatives in thier great sorrow.
