Obituary Joseph Thomson

January 3rd, 1946
Joseph Thomson Passes at Clifford

Joseph C. Thomson passed away at his home in Clifford on Wednesday, December 26, in his 78th year. He was a life-long resident of this community, the second son of James Thomson of Hope House Farm on Highway No. 9, Carrick, where his early years were spent. He married Agnes Hood Penman in the year 1919 and occupied farms on No. 9 Highway in Carrick and on the 14th concession of Howick and the 9th of Howick, later retiring to Clifford, a little more than a year ago. He was always very interested and active in the affairs of the community.

For many years he attended and helped on the Sunday School at Lints School, Carrick. He was originally Presbyterian, then United, and was elder in the Fordwich United Church. For over forty years he was a member of the Clifford I.O.O.F. He was more than ordinarily active in patriotic work and at the time of World War I did much to carry on the work of the Bruce Preparedness League of Mildmay, of which he was the president. The Clifford Agricultural Society also has lost one of its greatest enthusiasts.

Surviving him are his wife, his daughter, Margaret (Mrs. Melvin Taylor) of Fordwich; and his step son, William Penman, of Clifford; also a brother, Peter, of Kearney, Ont., and one sister, Elsie (Mrs. George Armstrong) of Teeswater.

The funeral took place from his residence on Saturday, December 29, with Rev. L.A. Knox officiating. The pallbearers were five nephews, Gregory and Peter Thomson, Cormack Armstrong, Wilmot Somerville and William Johnston, and a former neighbor, Robert Gibson of Fordwich. Burial took place in the Clifford Cemetery. At the close of a long consistent Christian life it can be truely said of him, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course: I have kept the faith."
