HURON COUNTY TOWNSHIPS
Stories and information on Huron County Townships taken from the book The Settlement of Huron Countyby James Scott, 1916. Ryerson Press, 1966
MORRIS TOWNSHIP
This township is the only one in Huron County which derives its name from a distinguished Canadian Citizen - The Honourable William Morris, a Cabinet Minister in the Legislature of the United Canadas at the time this township was surveyed. William Morris was a native of Paisley, Scotland, where he was born in 1786. He came to Montreal with his father in 1801 and served in the War of 1812 during which he participated in the capture of Ogdensburg. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly for Lanark in 1820 and was active in political affairs of the Canadas until his death in 1858. Morris is laid out in the shape of a parallelogram, bounded on the north by Turnberry, on the south by Hullett and McKillop, on the east by Grey, and on the west by Wawanosh. The total acreage is 55,160. It is supplied with water by the south branch of the Maitland River. Probably the first clearings in this township were made somewhere between 1849 and 1850 by Kenneth McBean and William McConnell, both of whom settled near the Village of Blyth. McBean was a Scotsman and McConnell an Irishman, a native of County Down. Other settlers prior to 1852 were John McRae, Christopher Corbett, John Brandon and Robert Amrstrong. All four were Irishmen from County Fermanagh. In the latter part of 1852 after the sale settlers took up land in various sections - Charles W. Parker on Lot 10, concession 6 in the summer of 1852. Mr Parker later became the first reeve of the township. Other early settlers were Joseph England, William, John and David Geddes, and Hector McLean, all of whom settled in the 3rd and 4th concessions. Abraham Proctor and Joseph Stubbs also settled on Concession 4 and Charles Proctor on Concession 5 in 1852. Settlers were primarily of English and Scottish origin with a good sprinkling of Irishmen
