Kent County Newspapers

Most newspapers are kept on microfilm at local libraries and museums.

City of Chatham
Chatham Daily News from 1902 and still runs, indexed for births, marriages and obits at the main branch (Chatham) of Chatham-Kent Public Library. This is the major newspaper of the county, and information is not limited to the city of Chatham. It began as the Chatham Evening Banner, changed its name to the Chatham Banner, then to the Chatham Banner News and finally to the Chatham Daily News in 1902. I'm not sure what year the Chatham Evening Banner began - will find out and update this page.

There is a web site for the Chatham Daily News, but it does not list obituaries.

Chatham Daily Planet began in 1851 as the Chatham Ontario Western Planet until 1856, was called the Chatham Planet and was published weekly 1857-1891, and finally the Chatham Daily Planet which ceased production Dec 29, 1922.
It is indexed for births, marriages and obits at the main branch of Chatham-Kent Public Library.

One early newspaper for the area was The Chatham Journal, which is on microfilm at the main branch of Chatham-Kent Public Library, for July 3, 1841-July 27, 1844.

Chatham This Week is a small weekly paper which only began about ten years ago, and although they don't have as many obits as the Chatham Daily News, they do have their obits online and archived back to Oct 18, 1997.
