Kent County Books

This page is limited to books that cover the entire county, or at least a good part of it.

Many of these books can be purchased from Kent County Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society. [$]

Guide to Tracing Your Family in Kent County, published in 1994 by Kent County Branch OGS. Highly recommended!

Illustrated Historical Atlas of Kent and Essex Counties originally published in 1881 by H. Beldon and Co., and reprinted in 1973. This is one of the series of atlases published by Beldon, and if your ancestors were landholders (farmers) in 1881 they should be shown on the appropriate township map. There is also biographical information on many of the early pioneers.

Commemmorative Biographical Record of the County of Kent, originally published in 1904, reprinted. An index was done by Kent Co. Branch OGS.

Index to Essex-Kent Militia Records, 1812-1815

Romantic Kent (1626-1952) by Victor Lauriston (Index is in a separate book published by Kent Co. Branch OGS). This is a thick book with an excellent history of the area.

Valley of the Lower Thames, 1640-1850 by F.C. Hamil, 1951 goes into more detail than Romantic Kent.

A brand new book just out (1999) by Lisa and Jim Gilbert is There was a Time. It seems to be mostly about the city of Chatham, but also covers the surrounding area.

When Chatham Was Woods: Reminiscences Of The Pioneers, 1996, by John Rhodes

Landmarks From The Past, by Don Spearman. A pictorial history of the Dresden area.
