Keith Thompson, Clayton, Ontario - 26 March, 2001

RUSSELL BAIN THOMPSON

The death of Mr. Russell Bain Thompson of R.R.2, Clayton occurred at the Almonte General Hospital on Friday evening, March 18, 1977, following an illness of five years' duration with cancer. He was 65. Born in Lanark Township on March 16, 1912, he was a son of the late Daniel John Thompson and his wife, Mary Ann Aitken. He received his education at S.S. No 12, Lanark. Mr. Thompson was a farmer in the Galbraith section of Lanark Township, and previous to his illness had been employed at the Almonte Dairy Products. He was the owner of Thompson's Cottages and Campsite Establishment at Clayton Lake. Mr. Thompson was a member of Clayton United Church, and was a former member of the Clayton Recreation Club. He was married at Clayton United Church on May 19, 1938, to the former Mary Rintoul, who survives, together with five sons Leonard Russell, Clayton; William John, Almonte, and Donald James, Raymond Rodger and Terrence Thomas, at home; and six daughters, Anne Eva (Mrs. Cecil Spinks), Whitehorse, Yukon; Kathaleen Mary (Mrs. Gerald Lynch), Weston, Ontario; Laura Elizabeth (Mrs. Clarence Gemmill), Clayton; Linda Evelyn (Mrs. Gerald O'Connell), Almonte, and Nancy Lee and Lorraine Ellen, at home. Also surviving are six brothers Harvey of Ottawa; Rev. Leonard, Ruthven, Ontario; Lambert, Lanark Township; Alan and John, Ramsay Township, and William, Arnprior; and four sisters, Alice (Mrs. John Cross), Edmonton; Irene (Mrs. Earl Pretty), Middleville; Isobel (Mrs. Stewart Rodger), Rosetta, and Laura (Mrs. John Rintoul), Clayton. Two brothers, Edwin and Malcolm are deceased. The body rested at the Kerry Funeral Home, Elgin Street, Almonte, where a private wake was held on Saturday and a public wake on Sunday. The funeral was held from the funeral home on Monday, March 21st, at 2 p.m., with interment at Clayton United Cemetery vault to await burial in the United Cemetery. Rev. Gordon Smyth conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were six neighbours, James Foster, James Hannan, Thomas King, Ancel Hogg, Nathan Virgin and Archie Barr.

MUNRO, John H. (Johnny)

Peacefully at his residence on Monday March 31, 1986, Johnny Munro of Almonte in his 80th year. Son of the late John A. Munro and his wife, the late Elizabeth Young. Beloved husband of Jessie May Foster and dear father of Merrill of Acadia Valley, Alberta; Mildred (Mrs. Tom Handy), Eileen (Mrs. Don Andrews) of Oshawa; Leonard, Melvin and Clarence, all of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Predeceased by 2 sons, Merton and Stewart. Dear brother of Harold of Clayton, Clifford of Almonte, and Mrs. A. Stewart (Effie) of Galbraith. Predeceased by 5 brothers, Gilbert, William, Charles, Andrew and Hughie and 1 sister Mrs. Mary Powers. Also survived by 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church St., Almonte, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, where service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m., Rev. Jack Lougheed officiating. Interment Clayton United Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.

JOHN VERNON McDOUGALL

The death of John Vernon McDougall, formerly of 40 St. James Street, Almonte, occurred suddenly about 5 p.m. on September 4th, 1979, as the result of a heart attack. He was 57 years of age. Born in Almonte on December 17, 1921, he was the son of the late Albert McDougall and his wife, the former Catherine Virgin, presently a resident of Fairview Manor. Educated in Almonte schools, Mr. McDougall later gained employment with General Motors of Canada in Oshawa and worked locally for Hill Motors Ltd. and later Burns Pontiac-Buick Ltd. He also worked for the Department of National Defence in London, Ontario and Ottawa. He operated a taxi business in Almonte at the time of his death. He was married in Almonte on September 19th, 1946 to the former Roberta (Bertie) Houston, who survives. Prior to that he served overseas from 1940 to 1945 with the Canadian Army Ordinance Corps and saw action throughout the Mediterranean theatre. Mr. McDougall was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 240 and attended Almonte United Church. One of Mr. McDougall's main interests was horses, particularly Hackneys. He owned a number of Hackney horses throughout his life and for a number of years was a regular exhibitor at Almonte Fair. Besides his wife Mr. McDougall is mourned by his sons, Brian, South March; Brent, Lanark; Barry, Key West, Florida; Scott and Steven of Almonte; daughters-in-law Helen and Joan and a granddaughter, Cindy. Also surviving is his sister, Margaret (Mrs. E. J. Hepworth) of London, Ontario. Funeral services for Mr. McDougall were held at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte, on Friday, September 7, at 2 p.m. Rev. Mitchell of Carleton Place officiated. Interment was in Clayton United Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Larose, Ollie Barr, Eric Julian, Bob Houston, Gordon Knight and Mike Vaughan.

THOMPSON, Harvey - At St. Patrick's Home, on Monday, February 6, 1989. Harvey Lloyd Thompson, aged 89 years. Predeceased by his wife Edna Clarke. Dear father of Sandra (Mrs. Paul Bednarek), and Gerald, both of Ottawa and grandfather of Jennifer Thompson, Gregory, Patrick and David Bednarek. Also survived by his sisters, Alice Cross of Edmonton; Irene Pretty and Isobel Rodger, both of Lanark and Laura Rintoul of Clayton and 3 brothers, Alan and John of Carleton Place and William of Arnprior. Predeceased by his brothers Leonard, Edwin Lambert, Russell and Malcolm. Friends called at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 235 Kent Street, Monday and Tuesday. Funeral service was held Wednesday in the Chapel. Interment Notre Dame Cemetery.

Beloved wife of the late Lorne Edward Ritchie and dear mother of David of India; daughter of the late Alexander Barker and his wife the late Jessie McGill. Dorothy Southwell

Dorothy Ann (Bolton) Southwell, RR 2 Rockhaven Mobile Park, Carleton Place, died suddenly at home on June 5. She was 65. Mrs. Southwell was born January 15, 1916, the daughter of the late Dominic John Bolton and his wife Pauline who survives her. Mrs. Southwell was born and grew up in Almonte and was educated at St Mary's school. She was married January 2, 1939 to Frank Southwell, who also survives her. They have lived in the Carleton Place district for the last four years. Mrs. Southwell was a member of the Carleton Place Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by four daughters and one son: Betty Albeartie of North Bay, Frances Hurdis of Carleton Place, Patricia Southwell of Vancouver, BC, Ruth Carlington of Belleville, and Robert Southwell of Vancouver. She also leaves three sisters Marie (Mrs. Herb Ransbury), Margaret (Mrs. Cecil Arcand), and Beatrice (Mrs. John Byrne). Four brothers, John, Lawrence, Peter and James Bolton predeceased her. A funeral service was held at St Mary's.

ALEXANDER DRYNAN

The death of Alexander (Alex) Drynan occurred at Langham, Saskatchewan on July 22nd, 1977. Mr. Drynan was in his 90th year and was born in Darling Township. As a small boy he moved with his family to a farm near Clayton Village. He attended Clayton Public School. When a young man he went West and homesteaded at Sonningdale, Saskatchewan and resided in this area until his death. He was the last surviving member of a family of eleven children born to the late James Drynan and his wife Katherine Kilgour and was predeceased by four brothers, William J., John R., Harold all of Clayton, and George of London, Ontario, and by six sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Edward Shane) of Clayton, Frances, (Mrs. William Whalen) of Carleton Place, Ellen, (Mrs. Charles Jessop) of Sudbury, Violet, (Mrs. Edward Brian) of Windsor, Katherine (Mrs. Peter Miller) of Arnprior and Almonte, and Mary (Mrs. Jack Kirk) of Almonte, Ontario. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in this area.

BURGESS, Cecil A. - At his residence 82 Cleadon Dr. on Sunday, December 26, 1976,aged 61 years, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Preston H. Burgess; predeceased by his first wife, Helen McArthur Burns; dear husband of Helen Mangione; dear father of Kenneth P. Burgess of Ottawa; brother of Mrs. John T. (Lola) Forsythe, Pakenham, Ontario; and the late Mrs. Gordon (Nettie) Renfrew. Ontario. Rested at McEvoy Shields Funeral Home, 235 Kent Street. R. B. CAMERON

Friends and neighbours were saddened by the sudden passing of Mr. R. B. Cameron at the Almonte hospital on Sunday, December 12, 1976, in his 75th year. Mr. Cameron was born on June 26, 1902, at Flower Station. He was a son of the late Robert E. Cameron and his wife, Elizabeth Lett. As a young man he worked on the railroad. He was married October 20 1925, to Hilda Command. Together they farmed for a number of years before retiring, moving to Clayton. Left to mourn his loss are his wife and two sons, Ross in British Columbia and Ron at home. A son, Cecil, is predeceased. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother, Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Command), Carleton Place; Lyla (Mrs. Gordon Ellicott) Almonte, and William of R.R.2, Clayton. The funeral was conducted from the Kerry Funeral Home to Clayton United Cemetery, with interment in the spring. Rev. Gordon Smyth officiated. Pallbearers were Jack Cameron, Boyd Cameron, Cyril Ladouceur, Mervyn Munro, Harold Kelly and Leslie Ladouceur. The large number who paid their respects, the numerous floral tributes, donations to the Fairview Manor and messages of sympathy received gave evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Man killed as trailer and van collide

The collision of a tractor-trailer loaded with lumber and a delivery van took the life of a Carleton Place man Friday. Robert Brydges, 24, was killed instantly when the van he was driving was crushed. Steven Clark, 27, of Pennsylvania, has been charged with careless driving, failing to share the roadway and having an insecure load. The accident took place around noon, beside the Pakenham five-span bridge. Clark was driving a tractor-trailer with a load of lumber from Butler Trucking Company in Woodlawn Pennsylvania. He was travelling southbound on the north edge of Pakenham and the driver of the van, Robert Brydges, of RR 1, Carleton Place was travelling northbound. "Clark crossed the centre and rolled over. During this time impact was made with the northbound van in the northbound lane," said Constable Grinton, the investigating officer from Perth. It has not yet been determined at what point the lumber fell off. There was a total of $17,000 damage to both vehicles. Arnprior volunteer fire department was called to the scene and freed Brydges from the van using the jaws of life. Perth police are still investigating the accident.

WILLIAM BLAKELEY

The death of William Wallace Blakeley of 115 Colina Street, Almonte, occurred at the Almonte General Hospital on Sunday, March 28, 1976, following an illness of one week. He was 74. Well known in Almonte and area, Mr. Blakeley clerked in Lee Pro Hardware for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Almonte Fire Brigade for 51 years, and was a member of Almonte Presbyterian Church. He was an ardent sports fan. Born in Toronto October 18, 1901, he was a son of the late John Blakeley and his wife Emma Wilson and came with his parents to Almonte when he was 15 years of age. He received his education in Toronto schools. Mr. Blakeley was married at Almonte on November 29, 1922 to the former Clara Elizabeth Bennett, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Keith of Almonte and William of Sterling; a daughter, Katherine (Mrs. Gilmour) of Toronto; two brothers, Art and Jack Blakeley of Simcoe, and a sister Edna (Mrs. Wilmer Illingworth) of Almonte. He was predeceased by a son, Wallace; a brother, Thomas of Almonte, and a sister, Mrs. Annis Pritchard of Toronto. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Comba Funeral Home. Church Street, on Tuesday afternoon, March 30, at 2 o'clock, with interment at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Rev. Paul Rumball officiated. In lieu of flowers it was requested that donations be made to the Almonte Comm. unity Centre.

ROBERTSON - In hospital, Carleton Place, Ontario, on Monday, September 24, 1979, Kenneth Paul Robertson, dear son of the late George A. Robertson and the late Jenny Paul, dear brother of George Robertson, Almonte, and Archie Robertson, Clawson. Michigan; predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Russell. In his 76th year. Remains donated to Medical Science. MRS. EDGAR HUDSON

Mrs. Edgar Hudson passed away suddenly after a short illness in Carleton Place Hospital on Monday evening, July 3, 1972, in her 83rd year. Her maiden name was Alice Evyleen Rath. She was the daughter of the late Alec Rath and his wife, Elizabeth Paul. On May 1, 1912, she married Edgar Hudson in St. George's Church Clayton, who predeceased her on April 10, 1967. Left to mourn her loss is one son Kenneth, one grandson Gary, two great grandchildren, Gwen and Kimberley, all of Clayton; two sisters, Essie, Mrs. J. L. Erskine of Almonte, and Annie, Mrs. Clifford Stanley, Lanark Lodge, Perth. The service was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte, on Thursday, July 6, at 2 o'clock, thence to St. George's Cemetery, Clayton. The service was conducted by Rev. H. Brown of Clayton, assisted by Archdeacon J. Salter, Almonte. Pallbearers were all friends of the deceased; Willie Bellamy, Herbert Rath. Larry Command, Kenneth Robertson, Alec McIntosh, Brantford, and William Gillan, Pakenham.

JOHN HENRY MUNRO

John Henry Munro of 19 Martin Street, Almonte, passed away at the Almonte General Hospital on September 11, 1978, at age 55. Mr. Munro was born in Ramsay Township, on January 30, 1923, the son of Ernest and Edna Munro, and is survived by his wife Larence Ladouceur. Educated locally, he served with the 48th Highlanders Regiment during the Second World War; afterwards taking a position with Metcalfe Construction. Mr. Munro then worked a number of years for Lindsay Farm Equipment, having been most recently employed by Petrofina Canada. Mr. Munro leaves his sons, Howard John Munro of Ottawa and A. Ross Munro of Almonte, and one grandchild, Phylip Jason Munro. His brothers, Carman (Pete) Alan Munro of Almonte and Kenith Orville Munro of Burnaby, B.C. as well as his sisters, Mrs. Wilbert McLeod (Eileen) of Niagara Falls, Mrs. John Terpstra (Muriel) of Garson, Ontario, and Mrs. William C. Munro (Wilma) and Marion Munro, both of Almonte, grieve his passing. At 3.30 p.m. on September 13, at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home a public service was held. Interment followed at the Clayton United Cemetery with Mr. Carson Cowan officiating, assisted by Mr. George Poole. Pallbearers were Carl Munro, Roy Munro, Brian Munro, Don Lockhart, Bob Ladouceur and Floyd Reid.

BOAL, William Clarence - In hospital at Almonte on Saturday November 23, 1985. Clarence Boal of Cedar Hill, age 72 years. Beloved husband of Marion Keays and dear father of Mrs. M. Rahman (Barbara) of Mississauga and Mrs. John Henry (Murial) of Almonte. Brother of Mrs. Joe Melanson (Kaye) and Howard of Almonte. Predeceased by 1 brother Harold. Loved grandpa of Marie, Patricia and Michael Henry and Kent Rahman. GORDON JAMES

The death of Mr. William Gordon James of R.R. 1, Carleton Place, a former reeve of Ramsay Township and warden of Lanark County, occurred in hospital at Carleton Place on Saturday, August 18, 1979, after a lengthy illness. He was in his 73rd year. Mr. James was active in the affairs of the community. He was reeve of Ramsay Township for ten years and warden of Lanark County in 1964. Before assuming the reeveship in Ramsay he served two years on Ramsay council, and prior to that time he was a member of Lanark Township council for two years. He retired from municipal life in 1965. In fraternal circles he was a past County Master of Lanark County Loyal Orange Lodge. He was an active member of St. George's Church, Clayton, and later of St. John's, Innisville, and also took a keen interest in the Union Hall and I.X.L. cheese factories. In his earlier years he spent some time surveying in the Rouyn district of Northern Quebec, and was at one time a player on the Union Hall Tigers ball team. Born April 20, 1907, Gordon was the eldest son of the late William E. and Annie James of the James Settlement of Lanark Township. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, the former Wilhelmena Dunlop; a son, Charles, and daughters Eleanor and Marilyn of R.R. 1, Carleton Place; a son-in-law, David Aldus, and daughter-in-law Evelyn James, and four grandchildren, Lisa and Shelley Aldus and Marshall and Travis James. Also surviving are three brothers, Warren of Perth, Frank and John E., R.R. 2, Almonte; one sister, Eleanor, Mrs. Ray Bartlett, Rockhaven Park, Carleton Place, and one aunt, Mrs. Eleanor Stewart, Calgary, Alberta. The funeral was held from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on Tuesday, August 21st, to St. John's Church, Innisville, where Rev. Roger Young conducted the service at 1:30 o'clock. Burial was at St. George's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Leonard Dowdall, John Weir, George Wright, John R. W. James, Steven Bartlett and Gary Hudson.

MRS. ALICE LALONDE

After a short illness, Mrs. Alice (Wilson) Lalonde passed away Friday, June 15, 1979, in Fairview Manor. She was in her 95th year. Mrs. Lalonde, the daughter of the late John Wilson and Charlotte Ellis, was born on August 4th, 1884, near Boyd in Darling Township. One brother, Harvey Wilson and one sister, Mary (Mrs. Mel Woods) predeceased her. Lammermoor school was the site of Mrs. Lalonde's education. At Hopetown, on May 2, 1911, the marriage between Alice Wilson and Joseph Henry Lalonde took place. They farmed for seven years near Hopetown before moving to the third line of Ramsay in October 1918. This farm was home to them until June 1952 when Mrs. Lalonde and two sons, Stewart and Carman, moved to the R.R. 2 Almonte farm previously owned by Mr. and Mrs. Morris Turner. Mrs. Lalonde resided at this farm until she moved into Fairview Manor in September 1977. Mrs. Lalonde was involved in church and community activities from an early age. She was a active member of the Hopetown, Rosetta and Clayton churches The Women's Institutes of Hopetown and later Union Hall were very important to her. She was a life member of the latter. Two sons, Harvey at an early age, and Boyd in World War II, predeceased Mrs. Lalonde. She was a Silver Cross Mother due to Boyd's death. Left to mourn Mrs. Lalonde are four sons; John Clarence of Kingston; James Ernest, Almonte; Stewart Wilson, Almonte, and Carman Archibald Carleton Place, and two daughters, Ruby (Mrs. C. E. Magahey), Toronto, and Kathleen (Mrs. K. McIlravey), Almonte. Also surviving are eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews survive also. Mrs. Lalonde's two sisters-in law, Mrs. Myrtle Wilson and Mrs. Theresa Ranger, are left to mourn. The funeral service was held at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home on June 18 at 2 p.m. with Reverend James White officiating. Interment took place at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Six of Mrs. Lalonde's grand sons served as pallbearers. They were Dwight Crawford, Bill Doeffer, Bill Lalonde, David Lalonde, John McIlravey and Aki Omai.

EDITH MARION TOSHACK

The death of Edith Marion (Lindsay) Toshack, formerly of R.R.3, Almonte, occurred suddenly at Almonte General Hospital on Tuesday, August 29th, 1978, as the result of a heart attack. She was 69 years of age. Born in Pakenham Township on January 3rd, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Milton Alexander Lindsay and his wife, the late Ethel Mae Scott. Educated in Pakenham, she later married Robert Ewen Toshack in Pakenham Township on September 29, 1934. The couple farmed in the Pakenham area and Mrs. Toshack became involved in the Ramsay Women's Institute and was a member of St. Andrew's United Church in Pakenham. Surviving besides her husband are four sons: Jack and Art of Almonte; Keith, Prescott; and Allen of Black's Corners. She is also survived by one brother, Wilfred Lindsay of R. R. 1, Pakenham. Funeral services for Mrs. Toshack were held at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte, on Friday, September 1st at 2 p.m. Rev. Cecil Dodds conducted the service. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronald Lindsay, Allan Timmins, Donald Lockhart, Russell Camelon, Charles Tate and Gordon Donaldson.
