History of Highland Line Cemetery The Highland Line Cemetery is located on the East Half of Lot 6, Concession 9 in the Township of Dalhousie, in the County of Lanark and Province of Ontario, one mile south-east of the Village of McDonald's Corners. Neil McNeil originally obtained this land from the Crown in 1825. He later moved to Plympton Township near Sarnia and sold it in 1845 to John Playfair who sold it to John Hamilton in 1855. In 1866 John McLellan became the owner. Today the owner is Thomas Adam whose ancestors settled across the road from the cemetery and still own and operate this farm. The earliest recorded interment is that of Charles McLean who died on March 26, 1836; but no doubt there were interments before as this grave is some distance from either fence and the area was settled in 1821. Of note is the iron tombstone of Alexander McFarlane and his wife Catherine McLean in Row A21-4. The original plot holders were mostly of Scottish origin coming from Paisley, Argyllshire and other parts of Scotland about 1821 and later. Many of the descendants still use the cemetery and live in the area. As an illustration the 8th generation of Camerons is interred in this cemetery starting with Thomas Cameron, who died on June 24, 1842, buried in Plot A17-Row 6 and his great, great, great, great, great Granddaughter Sara Jennifer Budau who died July 18, 1977, aged 6 days, buried in Plot B3-Row 10. |
