This map is by no means exact but it should give you an idea
of how the township was/is situated.
Ramsay:
Almonte: The first settler, UEL, received the land in 1819. It was one of the principal wool manufacturing towns of the Ottawa Valley. The village had many name changes: Shepherd's Falls, Shipman's Mills, Ramsayville, Waterford and then Almonte after a Mexican general.
Appleton: Was first called Apple Tree Falls. Settler located 1823. Was then known as Teskeyville. Appleton shows in the Historical Atlas of Lanark County.
Blakeney: Was originally called Norway Pine Falls, then Snedden's Mills after the first settler Alexander Snedden in 1822. Then it was called Rosebank in the 1850s - which is one of the names showing in the Historical Atlas for Lanark County, however Blakeney PO shows at the same place.
Carleton Place: see Beckwith Twp.
Clayton: Is located on the Indian River. It was first known as Bellamy's Mills after Edmund Bellamy of Vermont who built a mill here in 1824. Then the name was changed to Clifton and then Clayton. Clayton PO is the name showing in the Historical Atlas of Lanark County.
