Census Returns before 1867

Township authorities in the Johnstown District took Census returns at different times - mostly for taxation purposes.

  • Returns for Augusta Twp in Grenville, for instance, exist from 1796. These are basically a "Heads of Household" type of return but much useful information about a family's members and situation can be found. Returns for other Townships exist, but nowhere in the area were other enumerations taken as early as they were in Augusta.
  • Provincial authorities for Canada West took a Census of Inhabitants in 1842 and again in 1848. These were also a "Heads of Household" type of return, and several have been Indexed.
  • Fully nominal returns, where information about each person living in any location was gathered by Provincial authorities, were taken in 1851 and 1861. These personal returns, as well as many informative Agricultural Schedules for some parts of the counties, survived to be microfilmed in 1955.

The Leeds & Grenville Branch OGS offers Indices to several of these early census records. The "Catalogue of Census Returns on Microfilm, 1666-1891", published by the National Archives, 1987, ISBN 0-660-53711-7, lists these NA microfilm reels for Grenville returns:

  • 1796 - C-1345
  • 1806 - C-1345
  • 1813 - C-1345
  • 1823 - C-1345
  • 1824 - C-1345
  • 1842 - C-1344, M-5908
  • 1848 - M-5909
  • 1851 - Completed by 12 January 1852 (portions have not survived) - C-11724
  • 1861 - Completed by 14 January 1861
