Death of Jas. Anderson
On Monday evening, June 28th there passed away one of the old pioneers of Manitoulin, in the death of James Anderson at the advanced age of 86 years, 5 months, and 23 day.
Mr. Anderson was born at Portsoy, Banffshire, Scotland. He came to Canada in 1857, accompanied by Mrs. Anderson and two children. He settled in Pickering Township near the town of Whitby.
Thirty-five years ago he came to the Manitoulin Island and took up land in the Township of Campbell, where he raised a family of twelve boys and two girls of whom twelve still survive.
Mrs. Anderson, whose maiden name was Sophia Boyes predeceased Mr. Anderson by nearly nineteen years.
The large gathering of old friends and others who met to show their last tokens of respect to their old pioneer, manifested the high esteem in which he was held by all.
The remains were interred in Grimesthorpe Cemetery between those of his wife and one son Peter who died in Kentucky, U.S.

JOHN ANDERSON
The community was shocked on Saturday morning of last week to learn of the sudden death of Mr. John Anderson. While he had not been in good health for some years, he became real bad on Friday evening with a heart attack and passed away about 10 o'clock.
Mr. Anderson came to the Island as a small boy and has told many interesting pioneer experiences of those early days.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of his son, James, on Sunday afternoon by Rev. G.W. Johnson, assisted by Mr. A. Steer, student pastor of the Baptist church here. The splendid christian character of Mr. Anderson and the high esteem in which he was held by his many friends was readily seen by the tremendous crowd which turned out to the funeral.

Obituary
Joseph Anderson
Joseph Anderson, a highly respected resident of Campbell Twp., passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. King, on Monday, June 27, 1921. He was in his forty-eighth year and was in his usual good health until a few days before his death, and it was with difficulty that he was persuaded to go to bed. The Doctor was called and he pronounced his illness pneumonia.
Joe, as he was called by everyone, was never sick before and he was restless and hard to persuade to stay in bed. Although all that could possibly be done by both medical skill and kind friends, he passed away peacefully on Monday morning.
He was born in the Township of Pickering near Claremont forty-eight years ago and came to the Island with his parents when he was seven years old. He lived with his parents in Campbell until they died and since has made his home with his sister, Mrs. King, where he passed away. Altho’ he was a strong man he had a tender heart. He was kind and obliging to all with whom he came in contact. He was industrious and strictly honest and will be much missed. The services were conducted at the house and at the grave by Rev. Mr. Newby. The large funeral showed the esteem in which he was held.

CECILIA GRACE (MCKENZIE) ARCHER
Cecilia Grace (McKenzie) Archer passed away on the morning of May 25,
2004, in Houston, Texas. Grace was the younger daughter of Donald and
Lena (Fairman) McKenzie, born on August 22, 1912, in Little Current,
Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. She was preceded in death by her
husband C. Frank Archer, sister Ethel Miller, and son-in-law Tom Arkell,
and is survived by daughter Marianne Arkell, brothers Donald and George
McKenzie, granddaughter Joanne (Robert) McCay, grandson Ken (Susan)
Arkell, and great-grandchildren Jennika, Bobby, Tommy, Casey and Clint,
and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
What an interesting life Grace had, all 91 years! She began in a remote
part of the Canadian wilderness (Manitoulin Island, the largest
freshwater island in the world, she would often point out!) and lost her
mother at a young age. Her father remarried Gertrude, added two sons to
the family, and earned a living as a hunting and fishing guide to the
likes of Henry Ford and the Roosevelts. Memories of her youth back in
the early `20s included joining her father and sister on boating
excursions and spending time at Strawberry Island with grandparents,
William and Mary McKenzie, where her father was lighthouse keeper.
Married life began for Grace and Frank in the mining communities of Red
Lake and Elliot Lake, Ontario, again very remote areas in the
early `30s, often only accessible by plane. Grace never learned to drive
a car, but she could handle a boat! Their daughter, Marianne, brought
much joy and the two, mother and daughter, played many a card game on
those cold winter nights. When Frank's health failed, the couple moved
to the city where they worked as a team, managing apartment buildings in
Hamilton and Toronto. After losing her husband, Grace became
a `globetrotter', traveling and enjoying family and friends to the
utmost of her ability. In later years, she slowed down (by her
standards) and enjoyed sharing laughter with friends and family, playing
cards and watching any sport, especially baseball and her teams: the
Blue Jays and Astros.
Our Gramma Grace had a gift for making any situation, good or bad, a
better one. She had such a zest for life, a fun loving spirit, a quick
wit, and a kindness and sensitivity for others that was remarkable, yet
she was very, very humble. When you look up the meaning of the
word "grace", amongst the definitions you find `generosity of spirit: a
capacity to tolerate, accommodate or forgive people', `pleasing and
admirable quality', `dignified, polite and decent behaviour', and `gift'
and it would seem she was very well named. Anyone who knew Grace Archer
will have a happy thought or memory of her, that is her gift to us, and
we will all surely miss her.

OSWALD ARGMANN
In memory of Oswald Argmann, December 17, 1928-September 5, 2006.
A Walk Through Memory
Come and walk with me,
Along a path of memory.
Through the good and the bad,
Through the happy and the sad.
Every tree we will pass,
Will be our looking glass.
We will stop and see,
A one time shared memory.
Let that tree be oak,
For it tells of a simple folk.
One proud as one can be,
Rivalled only by natures piety.
Let the tree be a birch,
A time of faith and prayers in church.
In the sweat of thy brow,
You rooted God's acres to blossom and grow.
If that tree is pine,
It tells of a sad, sad time.
When our lives were placed in disarray,
Because of one black-dismal day.
Each time we see,
A sad, sad memory,
We will lock it deep inside,
To show a brighter side.
One memory so deeply anchored,
Is the memory of my homeland I parted.
A young boy's dreams,
Floated away in a turbulent stream.
Though each memory,
May not be a sweet melody.
They are a token of our past,
Visions of a forgotten task.
When we meet again,
Down old memory lane,
The times we have shared today,
Will be the joys of yesterday. By Oswald Argmann
Your treasured memories will always be walking beside us. May God give you back a little of "Sudetenland" to rest your head till we meet again. Your wife Angela, daughters Ossie, Heidi (husband Matt) Carmen (friend Sami) and grandchildren Liesl and Liam. Arrangements in care of Island Funeral Home.

WELL KNOWN FARMER PASSES
A western Manitouliner to the core, Alfred Armstrong Sr. was a well-known and well-liked personality in the community. Mr. Armstrong passed away on Nov. 4, 1973 after a brief illness at the age of 79 years.
Born at Silver Water, he commercial fished at Burnt Island and Providence bay, and later commercial fished and farmed just outside of Gore Bay. Perhaps he had one of the largest flocks of sheep in the immediate area, and in later years kept trained wolf hounds to protect his flock. He was very upset when the wolf bounty was removed.
He was also known as a "dynamite man" and was employed in blasting for various townships and blowing out beaver dams.
"Alf", as he was known, was a hockey enthusiast and traveled with the senior hockey team throughout the years. Because of this interest he donated a trophy for the "most valuable player on the team."
He was an honourary member of the Canadian Legion and was interested in harness racing and was member of the racing association. He attended Board of trade meetings as a constant member. Cribbage was one of his favourite cards games and he won a trophy for the perfect hand in cribbage which is on exhibit at the Gore Bay Legion.

GEORDIE MCGREGOR ARMSTRONG
“So long, and thanks for all the fish”
We’re celebrating the life of Geordie Armstrong who passed away on Monday, May 23, 2011. He is loved and missed by his wife, Maureen, his three children Amy (Lee Mulcahy), David (Michelle), and Beth and his grandchildren Benjamin and Rowan. Born to Elgin and Clara Armstrong on February 3, 1950, Geordie grew up in Hamilton with his sisters Georgia and Helen and, when in Killarney, Ontario as a Junior Ranger, at age 17, met the love of his life, Maureen. Married during the ’72 Summit Series, Geordie and Maureen moved from Hamilton to London before settling in Little Current. A dedicated teacher his entire life, after graduating from McMaster University and UWO’s Althouse College, Geordie taught in London, on Manitoulin Island, in Espanola and Sudbury before retiring from Armstrong Public School in 2010. Geordie’s interests were many and varied; an avid reader and sports fan (Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays, Hamilton Ti-Cats), his lifelong love of learning, cooking, music, and fishing are but a few that he shared with his family and friends. His sarcastic humour, the way he put everyone before himself, his inability to suffer fools and the way he could strike up a conversation with anyone are only part of the legacy that will carry on in his memory. Geordie will be remembered as a member of the Little Current Lions Club, a ringette coach, a Library Board member, a Sudbury Rock Hound, a founding member of Manitoulin Volleyball and co-host of the Annual Armstrong Scavenger Hunt. The family would like to extend special thanks to all the 7th floor nursing and support staff at Sudbury Regional Hospital for their support and compassionate care. You are invited to join us for a celebration of Geordie’s life. Come and share food, drinks and happy stories in our home, after noon, on Saturday, June 4, 2011. Donations to the House of Kin in Sudbury, Ontario would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences can be sent to remembering.geordie@gmail.com.
