Obituary
JOHN BADGEROW
The community of Nairn Centre again records the death of one of its most respected citizens in the person of Mr. John Badgerow Sr. death came very suddenly, while the deceased was carrying in some wood, the result of a hemorrhage due to heart failure, on Dec. 1st at about 2.30 in the afternoon.
The late Mr. Badgerow was born in Balintray, Ont., 76 years ago. When quite a young man he moved up to Long Bay Manitoulin Island, where he married Miss Amarilla Lewis of the same place. After taking up farming for a number of years on the Island he moved to Nairn Centre to live.
Mr. Badgerow leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and four sons, namely John, Lorenzo, Elmer and Oliver all of Nairn Centre, also two brothers and one sister, William of Bruce Mines, Geo. of Gore Bay and Mrs. Pringle of Preston, Ont. Mrs. Sagont, another sister predeceased him last May.
The funeral was largely attended by his many friends and neighbors. A short service at the house followed by one at the Nairn Union Church conducted by his pastor, Rev. Howard black, taking for his text Rev. 14, verse 13; "Blessed are they which died I the Lord. They rest from their labors and their works do follow them."
Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow. The many floral tributes pay tribute to the esteem in which he was held.
One precious to our hearts is gone
The voice we loved is stilled.
The place made vacant in our home
Can never more be filled.
But peaceful be thy rest
'Tis sweet to breathe thy name,
In life we loved you dearly
In death we do the same
The flowers we laid upon the grave
Will wither and decay,
But our love for him who sleeps beneath
Will never fade away.
Our hearts will cling to memory dear
Of one who is called to rest,
And those who think of him to-night
Are those who loved him best.
We miss his loving hand clasp
We miss his cheerie smile,
But God, to us is whispering
'Tis only for awhile.
The Recorder, Gore Bay, February 24, 1927

J. HAROLD BAILEY (Manitoulin Game Warden 1937 - 1963)
Born - Gore Bay August 22, 1893
Harold Bailey has the distinction of being the first full time overseer on Manitoulin, being appointed to this position in July of 1937.
He also has the distinction of being one of the first graduates of the Lands and Forests Ranger School at Dorset in 1947 and being the officer who has served the longest on Manitoulin to date, 26 years.
In a letter to Harold dated July 22, 1937 a Mr. G.E. Baxter, secretary of the Executive Committee for the Island (no doubt an early version of the Manitoulin Board of Trade) invites Mr. Bailey to contact a Mr. L. Miller for the job of game warden on Manitoulin.
Harold did and was forthwith appointed. He served a long and distinguished career with Land and Forests (until 1946, the Department of Game and Fisheries which incorporated into Lands and Forests).
Mr. Bailey was known for his common sense approach to law enforcement but was not beyond "laying down the law" when circumstances dictated a hard line approach. As the enclosed newspaper clipping attests, even at the age of 70, Harold was still involved in some major investigations. Even after retirement in 1963 Harold worked an additional three years at the check point at Little Current during the deer hunt, no doubt because of his dedication to the job and sense of responsibility.

J. ALLEN BAILEY
With immense sorrow the family announces the unexpected passing of a very special husband, and father J. Allen Bailey at the Manitoulin Health Centre, Little Current on Friday, May 15, 2009 at the age of 74. Grieved deeply and dearly loved by wife Linda (Williams) treasured by cherished daughter Kim Brasil (Roger) and the overjoyed proud Poppa to Robbie and Jacob Jelly Bean. Allen was born in Evansville and enjoyed a variety of positions until finally settling into an "inside" job at St. Joseph's General Hospital/Manitoulin Health Centre until his retirement. In those years, ambulance duty was a hard taskmaster and often took him away from the comforts of home. He and his family loved the outdoors and enjoyed many hours of boating, snowmobiling, camping, and finally four-wheeling. Jack of all trades and master of none, he enjoyed the hours he spent working in his shop. With his earlier diagnosis, Allen was very downhearted for the loss of time that he would get to spend with his dearly loved grandsons. We are comforted that just recently Allen made his peace with his Maker. Family members share our sadness: parents Jim and Verna (Allen) Bailey (both predeceased), Forrest (predeceased), Marlene (Cal) Best, Murray (predeceased) and Lorraine, Gail (Myles predeceased) Patterson. Brother-in-law to Fay (Lyman) Corbiere, Richard (Miriam) Williams, Bob (predeceased), Pam (Dave) Williamson, Deb (Bev) Kingshott, Stan (Liz) Williams, and Shelly (Gord Lewis) Williams. He will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews. Embraced by good friends Nancy Brown, Darlene Bie, and Nola Lewis.
A celebration of Allen's life was 2 pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Burial of ashes later in Whispering Pines Cemetery, M'Chigeeng. Donations to Cancer Research or Heart and Stroke would be appreciated. Island Funeral Home.

PASSING OF W. T. C. BAILEY
"The passing of William T. C. Bailey on Saturday, October 24th, in his 83rd year, removed a well known and highly respected pioneer of Western Manitoulin.
Born in Bentick (sic) Township, Grey County, he came to Burpee Township with his parents, the late James G. Bailey and his late wife, Catherine Campbell, when he was 17 years of age. He resided in Burpee Township for forty-four years. There he cleared a good farm and built thereon a comfortable home. He did considerable timbering on Western Manitoulin, being well known among the timber men of that time. Twenty-one years ago he moved to Gordon Township where he resided until his death.
Mr. Bailey was possessed of a kindly and hospitable disposition, was a good husband and father. Of hardy constitution, he was firm in his conviction that the way of hard work is the one sure way to vigorous health and physical well being. That good health he enjoyed throughout his life time, until six years ago, when he suffered a stroke, which, although he recovered to quite an extent, left him more or less incapacitated. A second stroke a year ago, further reduced his strength, and on October 20th last, he suffered a third stroke which resulted in his death.
He is survived by his widow, formerly Flora Bell, who came to Manitoulin Island from Stayner, Ontario, in the year 1890. One son Harold of Gore Bay; five daughters, Mrs. Delbert McArthur of Gordon Township; Mrs. Ivan Campbell of Montreal; Mrs. Louis Cole of Burlington; Mrs. William McArthur of Collingwood; and Mrs. James Hamilton of Toronto; also surviving is one brother, Donald of Burpee Township; and four sisters, Mrs. Angus Bell, Mrs. James Panton, Mrs. Charles Bell and Mrs. C. Was in Eighty-Seventh Year and Leaves Nearly a Hundred Descendants
The funeral of the late Isabel Baker relict of the late B.B. Baker, took place Wednesday, March 27th to Oakland cemetery from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Hollingshead. She was the eldest of a family of fourteen, of whom only one sister survives, who still resides in Scotland. Mrs. Baker was twice married, both husbands meeting violent deaths. The Funeral of the Late Dr. J.A. Baker - 1936 –
Community Hall Crowded With Sympathizing Friends and Relatives
Sorrowing friends from all parts of Manitoulin filled the Community
Hall, Gore Bay to capacity on Thursday afternoon, June 25th to pay their last sincere and sad respects to one beloved by all, the late Dr. James A. Baker.
The funeral was conducted by Gore Bay Masonic Lodge and brethren
from all parts of the island. A short service under their auspices was
held at the home of Miss Jessie Clarke, after which accompanied by his
brethren in masonry, the body was taken to the hall where possibly the
largest and most impressive funeral service ever held on Manitoulin, was conducted by Rev. A.R. Sanderson, Rev. T.W. Batman and Rev. J.J Matthias assisted by a united choir.
Rev. Matthias opened the service with a short scripture reading
which was followed by the hymn, "Oh God Our Help in Ages Past." Rev.
Batman then read the 19th psalm followed by Mr. J. Black of Little
Current, who sang, "When I Have Crossed the Bar".
The Rev. Sanderson of Whitby, a life-long friend of Dr. Baker then
delivered the following very eloquent address:
We are living in a brokenhearted world. This old volume we call the
bible, which is the transcript of the Divine mind and the unfolding of
the Divine purpose and the revelation of the Divine will has gained its
popularity down through the ages from the fact that it has a gospel for
the grief-stricken as well as for the sin-shattered lives of men. Any
book that can assuage the soul's deepest anguish will never by our of
print. Here the speaker told a story of Dr. Joseph Parker of "City
Temple Farmers", speaking to a class of graduates for ordination he
said' "I envy you your opportunity and wish that I was young again to
dedicate my young, vigorous life afresh to the tolls and tasks of the
Christian ministry. I have tested this gospel at midnight, when the wind was cold and the waters of grief were surging around me. It has held me up through the years and it will hold those to whom you go to preach the gospel. Preach to broken hearts and you will never lack a congregation."The largest congregation in the world is that of the broken in heart. Perhaps that is why God allows so many hearts to break that they may realize their need of Him. The richest experiences of life and deepest joys are not usually found in the days of prosperity but in the times of adversity. We should live not for ourselves, but for others, and this was the motive that promoted the splendid service of our deceased brother. For God can heal the broken heart. Those of you who have been in the hands of the tender physician know this and others acknowledge it.
Then the speaker related an instance of a Korean woman who had heard
of the miraculous work that she was going on in a town some miles
distant. Trudging her way some fifteen miles to this town, on arrival
she did not know the name of the hall or the Christian chapel but asked
passerby, "Where is the place they are healing the broken hearted?" And
there to the joy of her own heart and soul she found the consummate
flower not only of Palestine but of the world and went away with a joy in her own soul and her face radiating with the Divine Presence. But foreign lands have no monopoly on broken hearts, wherever men and women are found there is sin and sorrow and affliction can be traced directly to sin for Our Lord solved this problem, in His day, for His disciples and for all time. When they came to him asking: "Who has sinned, this man or his parents?" Jesus answered: "Neither has this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God, should be manifest in him."
The root of all sorrow is sin. If there were no sin there would be
no sorrow, no heartbreak or death. The day is coming when God shall have put away all sin and then will come the dawning of the morning when "He shall wipe away all tears from our eyes and there shall be no more death or sorrow or sighing, neither shall there be any more pain."
It is this land I believe my departed brother's spirit has gone.
For God who rewards even a cup of cold water given in. His name must
have a large account in the favor of Dr. Baker for the unselfish service he rendered to the people of Gore Bay and vicinity for thirty-seven years. Dr. Baker was born near Paris, Ont., on November 11th 1875. His mother died while he was but two years of age and he brought up by his aunt Minnie (Miss C. Minnie Baker). He graduated from Hamilton Collegiate, going from here to Toronto University where he took two years in honour work in Arts and then took up the medicine course being an honour student and the winner of the gold medal of his year.
He came to Gore Bay in June 1899 and here he enjoyed a very large
medical practice during all these years. Beloved by his patients and
friends as is evidenced by the fact that to-day there are something about or over five hundred people at his funeral. The beautiful array of flowers coming from the brethren of the Masonic order of which he was a Past Master, and many life long friends, bear some testimony of their love of their family doctor and his worth in the community.
Dr. Baker is not dead as our Lord said; "I am the Resurrection and
the Life he that believeth in me shall never die, but have life
everlasting." Therefore he who went about doing good for thirty-seven
years will live forever in the hearts and lives of the people of Gore Bay and vicinity.
Rev. Batman in a short address paid sincere tribute to the departed.
The service closed with the hymn, "Blest Be the Tie That Binds," and
the benediction by Rev. J.J. Matthias.
At the graveside in Gordon cemetery a short service was held by Rev.
Sanderson and Rev. Batman, followed by the final rites of the Masonic
order. The honorary pallbearers were; Messers. T.R. Porter, R.A. Smith,
W.A. Smith, N. Buchanan, J. Kinney and Wm. Burns. Pallbearers were
brethren of the lodge; J.L. McKenzie, W.F. McRae, J.D. Gordon, E.F.
Priddle, R. Robinson and Dr. A.O. Hinds.
The late Dr. Baker is survived by his father, John P. Baker, Wilton
Grove, Ont., three aunts, Miss C.M. Baker, and Mrs. Hariett Hicks of
London, Ont., and Mrs. A. Setterfield, Minister, Kent, England; two
uncles John P. Baker and W. A. Baker of Wilton Grove, Ont., also a number of cousins, three of whom attended the funeral, namely, Miss Nellie L. Baker, Wilton Grove, Ont., Mr. F. M. Hicks, of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Mr. E. Steele of St. Catherines.

JOSEPH C. BAKER DIED WHILE AT WORK IN BUSH
Large Gathering at Funeral Which Took Place at Poplar on Sunday
The surrounding country received a severe shock on Friday, March 12 between the hours of five and six when it became known that Mr. J.C. Baker had died at his work in the bush at the back of his farm. His son Harris saw the team which had been with Mr. Baker, moving and at the same time Mr. Radcliffe and Mr. Ford saw them running from the bush and all went back and found Mr. Baker lying dead with his axe in his hand. His position and the surroundings showed he had made no struggle.
Mr. Baker was born in the County of Grey, in 1872, and moved to Manitoulin Island at the age of six with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Baker, and has since resided in the Township of Mills. In the year 1902 he was united in marriage with Gloria Sizer, of Barrie, Ontario, and since has been farming in Mills Township.
Mr. Baker was a man of sterling, Christian character always ready to lend a helping hand wherever possible. He took a very active part in the Church and Sunday School and always had the good of the community at heart.
He is survived by his one son, Harris; one daughter, Verna; three brothers, Edward of Ice Lake, William of Mills, J.L. of Barrie Island; and six sisters; Mrs. A. Robertson of Ice Lake, Mrs. M. McCannell of Gore Bay, Mrs. Donald Orford of Gordon, Mrs. Elmer Bumstead and Mrs. Wm. Weeden of Meaford and Mrs. Robert Orford of Gore Bay.
The Funeral
There was a largely attended funeral on Sunday at Mills, when friends from miles around gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the late highly esteemed Mr. Joseph Charles Baker, whose sudden death, in his prime of life, came as a shock to the community.
The service was conducted by the Rev. W. Cannon of Gore Bay, who preached from the text Luke 22:27. "I am among you as he that serveth " and explained how the son of God became the Son of Man and served in sympathy, kindness and thoughtfulness, because He was inspired by love; and likewise the departed brother, had served his dear ones in the home, his friends everywhere and brethren of the lodge, because he was inspired by love for Christ and all men.
Mr. Thorburn also paid his tribute to the deceased who had been his fellow worker in the Sabbath School, and emphasized the assurance of the sure and certain hope of Christ, held by the worker who had served and passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior so suddenly.
After this the brethren of Lodge No. 472, A.F. & A.M. Gore Bay, about forty being present, took charge and went through their beautiful funeral service, which was led by V.W. Bro. R. Robinson; six Past Masters acted as bearers.
A long procession of sleighs and cutters conveyed the mourners and friends to the cemetery and after the W. Bro. Rev. W. Cannon had finished the committal service, the Lodge proceeded with its stately and beautiful ritual, which was conducted by W. Bro. W.J. Griffith. The scroll, with the name of the deceased brother was reverently dropped into the grave by the Secretary, Bro. E. W. Davis, with his Masonic apron and each brother circled around the grave dropping sprigs of cedar upon the coffin, with a hand on the heart and a finger pointing upwards as an emblem of hope, and so the brethren gave their last sorrowful farewell. Thus committing his body to the ground, cherishing his memory in the heart, and commending his spirit to God who gave it, with sympathy and desire to comfort the widow and children.

Near Tragedy Caused by Freshly Filled Silo
Going into his silo four days after it had been filled, to tramp the ensilage, might have ended in tragedy for Tom Baker, of Ice Lake. As it was he suffered from weakness and difficulty in breathing. This was followed by pains in his shoulders and chest, then chills and fever.
He was attended by Dr. McQuay and his condition has now improved but many who have thoughtlessly done this same thing have not been so fortunate.
In the past week we have read of many such cases throughout Ontario. Apparently poisonous gasses rise form corn ensilage and farmers are warned not to enter their silos for at least ten days after filling. In this case the corn had been quite badly frozen before cutting.

Death of a Soldier
Letter received by Mrs. Anderson, North Bay, regarding the death of A. Ballentine, of Providence Bay.
Canadian Forestry Hospital
Luglefield Green
Funey, England
5-2-19
Mrs. Kate Anderson
North Bay
Dear Madam,
You will have heard of the sad death of your dear brother, Pte. A. Ballentine (2250544) sometime before this reaches you, but I know it would be some comfort to hear from a Sister who had been with him to the last.
The dear boy came in on Sunday, February 2nd, very, very sick with influenza and with acute kidney trouble. Everything was done that was possible to save him but there was no response to the various treatments and he grew steadily worse, dying three days after admittance here. He was so patient and willing to take his medicine and nourishment to the last. He spoke very little as it was a great effort for him to speak. You have my very deepest sympathy as a have a dear brother buried in France and well know what such a sorrow is.
Many times the boys do not report sick soon enough as they are all anxious to get back to Canada, and the result is they are beyond help as this epidemic of Flu is a very bad fever, and we are having another epidemic. Again accept very deepest sympathy.
Sincerely
T. W. Kiel
Sister-in-Charge

On Early Call
Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Armstrong some time ago adopted a little girl, Francis Barnum from the Soo. Recently she was taken to Gore Bay and underwent an operation for throat trouble. She revived after the operation, but the shock seemed too great for her nervous system, we understand, and she gradually sank and passed away. This is a peculiarly sad affliction, and Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong feel it keenly. The remains were brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. Kemp, Silver Water, where the funeral service was conducted by Rev. Wm. Munro. Thence the remains were conveyed to Silver Water cemetery, where they were tenderly lowered into the grave by Harvey Hutton, Ray Hutton, Norman Duncanson and Willie Kemp.
Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

LILLIAN BARRETT
Lillian Barrett passed away peacefully on November 3, 2007 at the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill.
She was born March 8, 1915 in New Liskeard, Ontario. She was the younger daughter of the Rev. Canon H.A. (Harry) Sims and his wife Annie (Herridge).
Canon Sims was a pioneer Anglican clergyman in Northern Ontario and Lillian had many fond memories of her childhood adventures in the north. When the family served on Manitoulin Island they were honored to receive names from the Ojibway community. Lillian was proud to receive the name of Ahbetageghagoqua, “Lady of Mid-day.”
Lillian attended North Bay Teachers’ College and taught primary grades in Northern Ontario until her retirement as a kindergarten teacher from New Liskeard Public School. It always gave her great pleasure to be recognized by her former students. She loved to hear about their lives and she kept in regular contact with many of them.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, Lillian served as the Girl Guide Commissioner for Temiskaming. She was a devout member of The Church of St. John the Evangelist, New Liskeard. She was a faithful member of the church choir and of the Evening Association. She served on the Advisory Board and she was a long time supporter of Camp Temiskaming.
Lillian loved to travel. A highlight for her was her trip to England with her nephew Skip. When her health prevented further travel she loved to bring out her photo album and relive that trip. Lillian always had at least one knitting project in progress and she was a voracious reader. She kept a crossword book beside her chair and enjoyed the challenge of solving the toughest ones.
Lillian’s home for many years was Sandy Cove, Sharpes Bay on Lake Temiskaming. She welcomed family and friends who enjoyed the cottages, the gardens, and the beach. She was very proud of her family and she was especially excited to receive news of the arrival of her great-great-nieces and nephews.

THE LATE MRS. THOS. BATMAN
Evangeline Agnew was born in Kilsyth, near Owen Sound, Sept. 17th, 1857. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Agnew. She came to Manitoulin in 1881 to teach school in Bidwell, and was married during the following year to Mr. Thos. Batman of that township. They resided for a time in Bidwell, removed thence to Rockville and again to Green Bay, finally locating at Sheguiandah where Mr. Batman engaged in sawmill operations and farming. Mrs. Batman took a prominent part in Sunday School work, having been teacher of the primary class for over thirty years. She also took a prominent part in Women's Institute work.
Her home was the home of the Methodist and United Church ministers for about twenty years; and every good cause had her hearty support. Besides her husband she leaves two sons, Julian and Stanley, and a daughter, Geraldine, also three grand children, all of Sheguiandah, who have the sympathy of the community in their loss of a kind and thoughtful wife and mother. Mrs. Batman had suffered very much but was called away on the twentieth of June, 1927 to a home which pain never enters.
Rev's. H. V. Ellison and O.D. Cadotte conducted the funeral service, assisted by Rev. J. C. Lowrie, then of Manitowaning, Rev. E. C. Moddle of Mindemoya and Capt. Renshaw of the salvation Army. Teenage Boy Killed in Hunting Accident - 1953
Melvin Baxter, 15 year old son of Mrs. Joanne Baxter and the late Thomas Baxter of Sandfield, was accidentally shot on Sunday, September 27th, about noon. In company with three companions, he was duck hunting at White Lake, when his sixteen gauge shotgun discharged as he was stepping into the bow of the boat. The shot hit him in the stomach and he died while being taken to the Red Cross Hospital in Mindemoya.
Only one of the boys was in possession of a gun license, as the age limit is sixteen years before a permit can be issued. With duck season now open, we hope all parents will caution teenage hunters that care and handling of firearms is essential and that a boy must be the full age of sixteen years before he can obtain the right to use a gun. In this particular case, a defective trigger is blamed for that fatality. It is always advisable for a boy to receive instruction from an adult and accompanying him on hunting trips to learn all safety measures.
An inquest will be held at Tehkummah hall, on Tuesday, October 6th, at 11 a.m., as directed by Crown Attorney, E.L. Claridge and presided over by Dr. J.F. Bailey, coroner of Little Current.

The Late Wm. Baxter
After several months of suffering William Baxter, an old pioneer of the Manitoulin, passed away to his final rest on Jun 21st. For months he had suffered from cancer on the stomach which slowly depleted his vitality, till even his strong constitution gave up the battle and he passed to the great beyond.
The deceased was a prominent figure in his day on the Manitoulin. He was for years in the lumber business, and was quite active in politics. He was an Orangeman of high standing and had done a great deal of organization for the society.
The Orange Lodges of Gore Bay and Kagawong attended and did honor to their departed brother. They formed a procession at his late residence and marched to All Saints Church where the funeral service was conducted by Rev. H. F. Hutton.
The funeral procession from the Church to Gordon cemetery was the largest that has been in Gore Bay for a long time. Everyone turned out to show their respect for the deceased and their sympathy for the bereaved widow and her family.
