Norman Beange Loses Life While Swimming at Burnt Island
A very sad accident occurred late Saturday afternoon at Burnt Island, when Norman Beange lost his life by drowning.
In company with Raymond McKay the late Mr. Beange had gone down to the water just before five o'clock to have a swim before supper, as had been their daily custom. When the supper bell rang at five o'clock, McKay left the water and proceeded to the boarding house. Beange stated that he would take another dip before coming out. He was therefore alone and how the fatality occurred will probably never be known as he could swim a little.
When he failed to appear for supper, an alarm was raised and his body was located in the water at 6:30 o'clock. Dr. Rosenthal was called and pronounced death due to drowning.
The late Mr. Beange was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Beange of Ice Lake and had been employed as manager of the Purvis Fur Farm at Burnt Island for the past six years. He is survived by his wife, the former Lenore Bracken, and a son Allan Patrick, aged two years. There are also his parents, six brothers and one sister, namely; Gordon and Evelyn of Sudbury, George in the Navy, Charles in Toronto, and Jim, John, and Grant of Ice Lake.
The funeral was held on Monday July 30th with service in the United Church, Gore Bay at half past two which was conducted by Rev. W. J. Rayner. Interment was made in Gordon cemetery.

Mr. Beaudin Drowned
Word was brought to town Tuesday night that Capt. Sid Smith ran
his tug on the reefs at La Cloche depot on Monday afternoon and that Mr.
Beaudin and a little grandson, named Legace, aged six who had gone tot heir help and afterwards started for Little Current had not since been heard of. Mr. Legace came over here Tuesday night and got Mr. Ferguson's launch to take up the search and at the time of writing they have not returned. It appears the tug had gone to the Soo early last week and as the weather was bad they had to remain several days at Thessalon, where they left Monday morning for home. Having to call at La Cloche, they first went there and while doing so ran on the reef.
Later - Mr. A. Ferguson found the boy yesterday sitting up to the
knees in water in the punt which had drifted sometime on Tuesday on an
island about six miles from his home. The little fellow was nearly dead with cold when found but soon revived. When questioned, he said his grandfather had fallen out of the punt by the tug. Search is being made for the body.

ANDREW CYRUS BEAUDIN
In loving memory of Andrew Cyrus Beaudin, Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at
the Extendicare York in his 99th year.
Beloved husband of Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Sagle (predeceased 1977) and
Mary Sagle (predeceased 1983). Loving father of Linda Ann Gilchrist
(Reg) of Lively. Proud grandfather of Daniel Gilchrist (Alexia
Hannigan) of Toronto and Wendy McDermid (Robert Henderson) of Lively.
Cherished great grandfather of Jesse McDermid and Morgen McDermid.
Dear brother of Elsie Sterling (Arthur) (both predeceased), Eugenia
Wallace (of Sault Ste. Marie) (Ed, predeceased), Cress (of Sault Ste.
Marie) (Clarence predeceased). Much loved uncle of many nieces and
nephews. Special loved uncle of Leona and Arden Bock and Doreen and
Alec MacEachren (all of Sudbury).
Andrew was born at Green Bay, Manitoulin Island on November 17, 1903.
He survived his share of childhood adventure, but found school to be
a "bother" as it interfered with his playtime. Arithmetic in all its
forms was a mystery to Andrew but his interest in reading only grew
and continued long into his adult life. Andrew and his sisters walked
to school daily, but instead of finding the walk tiresome he began to
enjoy the beauty around him. Even in his older years Andrew walked
almost daily, and continued to marvel at God's creation. In 1928, the
Wrigley Gum Corporation offered a prize of $25,000 to the winner of a
21 mile swimming race across Lake Ontario. Andrew entered, but was
defeated by the cold waters. He did, however work as a lifeguard and
trained in the Humber area and over the next four years raced again
in Lake Ontario during the Canadian National Exhibition. In his early
30's, Andrew tried his hand at acting by playing the part of a
"drunk" with the Colonel George Cox Players and over the next several
years he became an accomplished stage actor. Andrew's true profession
was in responding to God's call in his life; a call he had felt for
some time. In the mid 1940's he became the pastor of the Providence
Bay Branch of the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints
(Community of Christ). Andrew obtained his Bachelor of Theology
Decree and continued to read, write, minister and serve until he
could physically no longer do so.
By the time Andrew was 90 he had performed 85 weddings, 72 funerals,
49 baptisms, served 4,800 communions, delivered over 3,000 sermons,
offered 101 Patriarchal Blessings, attended 18 world conferences, 30
week-long reunions and over 35 children's camps. His joy was being
with young people. They appreciated his wit, wisdom and genuine
caring. Andrew took his response to God's movement in his life with
great responsibility and honour. He was a man who was much loved,
admired and respected and he will be greatly missed.
"Well done thou good and faithful servant."
A celebration of Andrew's life was held at the Providence Bay
Community Hall, Manitoulin Island on Saturday, April 20, 2002.
Cremation at the Parklawn Crematorium.
Donations to Camp Quality, The Heart and Soul Campaign, Cancer
Services or the Diabetes Association would be welcome.
Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Bernard Funeral Home.

Death of Mr. Chas. Beck
The messenger of death has been very busy during the past few weeks in the township of Gordon. Several of the Island pioneers including Mr. Jas. Martin and Mr. Jas. Milligan (and each of these have had also a daughter taken) have passed to their rest; and now we have to report the passing away of Mr. Charles Beck at the ripe age of 90 years. He died very peacefully on Sunday evening, Jan. 22nd at the home of his son, Mr. Phil Beck. Mr. Beck was a native of Gaspe and had many entertaining stories of the fisherfolk and habitants of the coast. He came to Gordon upwards of 30 years ago where he and his late highly esteemed wife with their numerous family have lived in the good will of their neighbors. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 24th, the Rev. John Tate being the officiating clergyman. IN LOVING MEMORY OF LAWRENCE FREDERICK BECK
In loving memory Lawrence Frederick Beck of Ear Falls who went to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 11, 1996 at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital at the age of 67 years.
The second son of the late Sam and Grace Beck, he was born at Evansville on Manitoulin Island. On May 10, 1952 he married Lois Moyer of Vineland, Ontario who was to become his friend, partner and co-worker in a journey that was to last more than 40 years. In that time they pastured a number of churches in Ontario and Manitoba; never seeking the path of ease, they led by serving as they sought to follow the leading and example of their Lord. They never strove for places of honour or greatness, but bypaths of service and self-sacrifice they became great among us. This is the legacy of Lawrence beck and it is this that we honour. Among the things he sacrificed at times to follow the call was his love for the woods and woodland recreation. This was returned to him in abundance during his brief retirement in Ear Falls, Ontario, the last stop in his journey before his eternal rest.
Lawrence is survived by his loving wife Lois (Moyer) Beck, daughters Margaret (Norm) Ladouceur of Snow Lake, Manitoba, Ruth (John) Hagan of Sudbury, Ontario, son James (Alicia ) of Toronto, Ontario, granddaughters, Jane, Karyn and Katie Hagan, Sara and Rachel Ladouceur, brothers Bob(Ev) of Brampton, Ontario, Ron of Toronto, sisters Betty Beaudin of Brancroft, Sheila MacDonald of Silver Water, Lyla (Gary) Beaudin of Sudbury and Lois (John) Hazzard of Silver Water. Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Sam and grace (Robinson) Beck, son David Beck and Sister, Clara Eadie.
Visitation was held on August 15 at the Red Lake Chapel. Funeral services were held August 16 at the Glad Tidings Tabernacle, Red Lake. Interment followed at the Woodland Cemetery, Balmertown. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, The Gideons Bible Society or to The Living Memorial through the Red Lake Chapel, P.O. Box 237, Red Lake Ontario, P0V 2M0.

Obituary
On Saturday morning last, November 7th the death occurred of Miss Lillian Eyer Beck, of Gordon. Deceased was 21 years and 15 days of age. For the past month she had been in poor health, and though all possible was being done it was felt by those who were in attendance that she could not recover. Although, knowing this, the end was none the less sad.
Miss Beck was one of the best known and most highly respected young ladies in Gordon. She was of a quiet unassuming disposition, always ready to do a kindly act. To know her was to love her, and by her death her many friends are overcome by a deep grief which nothing but time can remove. Besides a mother and father she leaves three sisters and a brother to mourn her untimely end.
The funeral took place from the home of Mr. Philip Beck, father of the deceased on Sunday, and it was very largely attended.

Gordon
It is our sad duty this week to report the death of Miss Lily Beck, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Beck of this township. Her death which occurred on Saturday about noon was due to a complication of diseases. She had been sick for about four weeks and during that time was treated by Dr. Baker, but she was beyond all medical assistance. It is very hard to part with them at any time but more so to see them cut down in the bloom of womanhood, she being only 21 years and 15 days old. Besides a host of friends she leaves to mourn her loss a father and mother, three sisters and one brother. The funeral l took place from her father’s residence on Sunday afternoon and was the second largest ever seen in Gordon. Rev. Mr. Tate, of All Saints Church conducted the services. The pallbearers were: James Emiry, Art McArthur, James Milligan, Jack Montgomery, Will Hall and Will Pemberton. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Robert Berry
On Saturday evening, April 1, death again entered Kagawong and called another one from our midst in the person of Robert J. H. Berry, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Berry.
The deceased had been suffering for a few months back from diabetis (sic), but passed away quite suddenly on Saturday evening at 9 o’clock after being only two days confined to bed.
Robbie, as we all knew him, was a very bright, intelligent boy of 13 years and 11 months, one of a family of four boys and two girls.
Had he been spared to grow up to manhood he would have shown talents which would have surprised even those of his own family, but Providence ordained it otherwise and called the little patient sufferer to Himself.
There are left to mourn his loss, his parents, two sisters and three brothers to whom the sympathy of all who knew him go out.
The funeral service was conducted in the Union Church by Rev. James McLauchlan, where many gathered to show their sympathy. The remains were laid to rest in Kagawong cemetery. The floral offerings were sent by the following: his grandmother, Mrs. Pickard, Mrs. John Greenfield, Mrs. James Gordon, while the one that lay at his feet came from the Sunday school.
The children of Heaven, all dressed in white
Were playing together in the Garden of Light
When Jesus came smiling and said to the band
Here’s another young pilgrim, come give him our hand.

BERRY, Roger Lyle - Passed away suddenly at home in Tilden Lake, Ontario on Thursday evening, December 14th, 2006. His wife and mate of forty-five years, Lois Elizabeth Lockhart and faithful golden retriever, Misty, were by his side. Roger was Dad to son Steven Douglas Berry, travelling in Mexico, and daughter Jay Rainey (Linda Berry) of British Columbia. He was 68 years young and had been retired from teaching at Dunnville Secondary School for 12 years. A sudden heart attack took him away before some dreams were accomplished but not before many were realized. The years the family spent in the Cayuga and Dunnville area were often remembered fondly and number as some of the most treasured memories. Roger was restoring a quirky cottage on Lake Bidwell in northern Ontario to a very nice waterfront home but he and his wife fell in love with Manitoulin Island and bought a woodlot there, planning to build on it in the spring. For those on computer, a full length tribute is available at martynfh.com. A celebration of Roger's life will be held on Manitoulin Island in June with family, friends, and colleagues invited to attend. Further details in this paper later
