FATHER BERNARD BRUNEAU
Obituary
A memorial mass was held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church Thursday evening, March 23 to honour Father Bernard Bruneau, S.J., until recently parish priest at St. Bernard's. Father Bruneau had led an interesting life and career, spending a great deal of time in the far east.
In fact, in the spring of 1999 when he left Little Current he returned to Nepal where he had previously served for many years. It was there that he died on March 11, 2000 in a private hospital in Kathmandu. He died of complications following an attack of food poisoning he had been stricken with in late February at a wedding dinner.
In the early morning hours of February 24, after becoming ill, Father Bruneau fell twice, injuring his head.
At a local hospital, the head injury was closed with stitches. He was admitted to hospital and early reports referred to a steadily weakening condition.
In the next two weeks, however he was stabilized, taken off the respirator that had assisted his breathing and seemed to be improving. His appetite returned, and he was communicating with visitors.
He passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 11 about 3 pm (Nepal time).
Father Bruneau was in his seventy-ninth year, and in his fifty-ninth year of ecclesiastical service.
Father Bruneau was born in 1921 and began his studies towards becoming a Jesuit priest in 1941. He completed his novitiate in Guelph, Ontario and studied philosophy at the University of Toronto's Regis College.
Following his studies at U of T, Father Bruneau went to India and so his lifelong interest in the east began. He completed his Regency in Darjeeling and then went to Kurseong to do his theological studies. He was ordained as a priest in 1954.
He served as a pastor at St. Mary's Church and as director of the parish school and orphanage in Kurseong in 1959. He then moved to St. John’s Church, also in Kurseong in 1960. He was there until 1968. From 1968 to 1974 he was a pastor in the town of Ghalaytar and then was posted back to Kurseong, from 1975 to 1982, to St. Alphonsus School and as a local parish priest.
He worked from 1982-1984 in Spokane, Washington and in St. John's, Newfoundland and between 1984 and 1987, was the priest at Holy Cross Mission, Wikwemikong.
He returned to Nepal from 1987 to 1995 and, after a brief chaplaincy at Morrow Park, he was assigned to St. Bernard's Parish.
In the spring of 1999, he requested and was granted leave to return to Nepal.
Mike O'Donnell, Father Bruneau's successor in St. Bernard's Parish told The Expositor he knew Father Bruneau mainly by reputation, and how the people of the parish spoke of him.
"He was a very graced person, I think," he said. "His heart was in Nepal. That's where he wanted to go."
"He was a simple and humble man," Father O'Donnell said, "but very, very generous. He had a very strong social gospel. That was dynamic..and he applied his faith in reaching and helping others."
Father Bruneau's funeral service was conducted on Sunday, March 12 in Nepal. He is survived by his two sisters: Mrs. Paula Mursden of Delta, B.C. and Mrs. Phyllis Able of Melville, Saskatchewan.
