The Late John Dunlop
In the passing away of Mr. John Dunlop Sr. of Bidwell Township the Island has lost a pioneer who spent many years in hewing out a home and transforming the forests of the early days into the well cultivated farms of the present day.
The life of the pioneer was no sinecure in the days when a bag of flour had to be carried for miles on the shoulders of the settlers, and the deceased has seen the Manitoulin transform from a wilderness or burnt lands to an up-to-date farming settlement and has taken his share of the burden. The deceased leaves a widow four sons and four daughters to mourn his death.

Uncle John Dunlop
John Dunlop always believed in providing support to members of his family. He learned this early in life when his mother and father died unexpectedly. John took responsibility for holding the family together on the Pike Lake farm and raising his younger brothers and sisters. When my father died, John and Charlotte were there to help and provided support to us, in every possible way.
When it was time to cut back on his farming activities, John still remembered his family members (Eric and I) by giving us the opportunity to purchase the land adjoining our farm on Ten Mile Point. He knew it would benefit us to expand the farm.
During his many years of his life all of the family and community (Manitoulin Island) received uncounted benefits from the unwavering support provided by John.

Eulogy by Fred Dunlop of Stayner
John Dunlop was a member of my family and he was more than just a cousin. He was a man whom I respected, whose friendship I cherished and a man who I will greatly miss. I shared many things with John, the love of farming and the land. I remember well the many talks we had, especially those as we walked around his farm. He had a great deal of pride in the family homestead, and on occasions, I was given a glimpse of this pride at work.
For me, as a child, it was a special holiday when my mom, dad and sister would pile into the car and head to the Island.
Besides the land, John and I shared the same love of vehicles, although John’s garage was more up to date than mine. Many times John would call and say, “Well, Fred, I’ve bought a new red Chevy 4 x 4 with 16 inch wheels: and when he sold that truck it would be in the same spotless condition as the day he bought it.
I remember my son Brian’s excitement when John allowed him to drive his Lincoln to my parents 50th anniversary dinner.
John and my dad, Clarence Dunlop, were very much alike. They were leaders, always taking an active part in their community. John’s contributions to his wife, his family and his community will not be forgotten.
As I said, “I will miss you John.”
“Not by the things he stored away, or tried to save. He made his fortune day by day, by what he gave. He had the smile his friends will miss, the cheering word, through days of grief and times of bliss, they often heard. A home of love and laughter filled, he grew to own, a spot serene, no one can build with wealth alone. So rich his fortunes these friendship and honour, love pride and memories”.
Fred Dunlop.
One of John’s favourite hymns, “The Old Rugged Cross”, was sung beautifully by Eva Skippen and Gertrude Aelick, accompanied on the organ by John’s cousin Barbara Cranston. The congregation also sang another of John’s favourite hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”.
Scripture Reading, by Pastor Van Kesteren, Revelation 21:1-8: Message-Ezekiel 22:30 “Who Will Stand In The Gap?”
The last hymn, by the congregation before the committal service, was “It Is Well With My Soul”. At the committal service, Elm View Cemetery,
Sheguiandah, these comforting words were read from the Bible by Pastor Van Kesteren – Thessalonians 4:13-18, Revelation 21:1-5 & Hebrews 13:20 & 21.
Pallbears, all relatives, were Fred, Kevin and Mark Dunlop, Eric and Barry Halcrow and Tom Mood. Honourary pallbearers were Roy Bayer, Don Abbott, Ken Ferguson, Alex Murray, Shawn Howard, Ralph Batman, Gordon Mood, Larry Glover and Tom Nighswander. Flowers – Fraser and John Dunlop.
Mourning this great loss are his wife, Charlotte, the Dunlop family. Laurie and Lois Mood and family, as well as the community.
On July 20th there will be a dedication of the sound system, at Grace Bible Church, in memory of John. Friends and family are invited to this service.

Early Pioneer Passes at Bass Creek
Mrs. Mary Dunlop Came to Island 72 Years Ago
After an illness of three months, the death of Mrs. Mary Dunlop
occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Morrow, Bass Creek, on May 19th. The late Mrs. Dunlop was one of the early settlers of

who later married her in the year 1868 to John Dunlop. She was a good
wife and mother to their eleven children, carrying on the burden alone
since her husband died in 1912. Although in her 88th year she was quite
active until last February.
The funeral service was conducted at her late residence by Rev.
Hardyman, assisted by Rev. Weeks and interment took place in Sheguiandah cemetery in the family plot. The unusually large crowd at the funeral was evidence that she was loved by all and also the numerous tokens of lowers bore mute testimony. Her family were all home for the funeral, except her son who in New York. Jim was present from Stayner and the rest of the family reside on the Island.
