ECIE MAWER FERGUSON (nee Frampton)
Ecie Mawer Ferguson died suddenly in the Women’s College Hospital, Toronto, on Friday, May, 16 having been rushed there after suffering an attack of thrombosis shortly before.
Mrs. Ferguson was born on the Manitoulin Island on 11th July, 1904. After living in Toronto for a number of years, she returned to live at Mindemoya five years ago, after her marriage to Mr. Charles Albert Ferguson. At the time of her death, Mrs. Ferguson was visiting one of her daughters at Willowdale.
The funeral took place on 20th May, in Toronto. The chief mourners were Mr. C.A. Ferguson, Mr. Ross Mawer, Mrs. Doreen Montgomery and Mrs. Shirley LeRhonde, (son and daughter) Another daughter, Mrs. Lois Greig was still in hospital after the recent birth of a son.
The service was conducted by the Rev’d M. P. Thomas, the Priest of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Mindemoya.
Interment followed in the Mount Forest Cemetery.
Many people from the Island were present including Mr. Wm. Frampton, Mr. and Mrs. L. Kyle of Sandfield; Mr. and Mrs. D.O. Williamson, Mr. and Mrs. William Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. M. Thomas of Mindemoya; Mrs. A. Hunt of Kagawong and Mr. R. McAllister of Tehkummah.
Mrs. Ferguson’s death was a great shock to the community. She was a most popular figure, and in the five years of her residence at Mindemoya she had endeared herself to everyone.
In the address at the funeral, Father Thomas said “she was one of those rare people of whom only good was spoken. Even the most critical could find no criticism to level against her. That is the greatest tribute which can be paid to anyone.”
She was a very devout Anglican, and a regular worshipper at the church of St. Francis of Assisi, Mindemoya. Besides being a most active member of the W. A., Mrs. Ferguson was the treasurer of the social club and was one who worked constantly behind the scenes for the benefit of the church. Nothing was too much trouble for her, and if anyone fell into difficulties she was always at hand to help.

ELIZABETH (BETTY) JANE FERGUSON
October 2, 1942 - February 4, 2009
On February 4, 2009, Betty passed away at the Manitoulin Health Centre in Little Current. She is survived by her loving husband, Bill, daughters Beth (Joe Ruzicka), of San Diego, and Jenifer, of Smiths Falls, brother Doug McCorkindale (Irene), sisters Joan Kennedy (Ian) and Brenda Colburn (Rob), brothers-in-law Ken (Linda) and Jim (Linda), sister-in-law Mary Lynn Sorel (Gerry), many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and last, but far from least, her faithful canine companion, Pilot. Born in Guelph to Archie and Velma (Howse) McCorkindale, Betty attended Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute and McMaster University's Teacher's College. She started her teaching career in Burlington at Kilbride School. Upon her marriage to Bill, she moved to Sudbury. In 1972, Betty and Bill bought Silver Birches Resort in Honora Bay, and made Manitoulin their permanent home shortly thereafter. Betty enjoyed hearing the stories of the guests who came to Silver Birches from all over the world. She was a second mother for many of the young (and not so young) people who worked at Silver Birches over the years, and had fond memories of all of them. Betty also enjoyed the many years she spent teaching at Little Current Public School. She took a keen interest in the kids she taught, being particularly pleased when the next generation arrived in her classroom. Her love of words and books was well-known, as was her fondness of tea and teddy bears. Her curiosity and love of travel led to many adventures; as a young woman on buses and trains with her Aunt Margaret Cluthe, and after her marriage in large and small planes with Bill. Trips to visit friends in the UK, all over Canada and many parts of the US provided some of her favourite stories. Betty was a great friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Visitation took place at the Island Funeral Home in Little Current on Sunday, February 8th. Funeral service took place on Monday, February 9th at 2 pm at the Little Current United Church. Interment will follow in the spring at the Green Bay Cemetery.

RUSS FERGUSON DIES IN BAIE FINE WATERS
LITTLE CURRENT – Russ Ferguson, a popular marina operator for many years in this community, is dead at the age of 65 from presumed drowning.
Mr. Ferguson had been visiting the Evinrude island Sunday in Baie Fine to ready the island for the arrival of Mrs. Evinrude and the Chanticlear.
When he didn’t return home by 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Mrs. Orma Ferguson and the Ferguson family notified the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
The OPP marine patrol found Mr. Ferguson’s boat tied to the Evinrude dock, and there were some signs that he had visited the island.
The search began Sunday night, and continued Monday morning until OPP divers found the body in about 12 feet of water near the dock. Mr. Ferguson had not been well recently, and police speculate he may have suffered a seizure and fallen into the water where he drowned. Police have ruled out foul play.

Russ Ferguson and his wife Orma had been associated with the marine business on Manitoulin for 30 years.
His first business location was on the Little Current waterfront where he was a Shell agent and Johnson outboard dealer. Later, the business moved to the present location of GG’s Foodmart, and finally located, as Ferguson Marine, at its present location on Highway 6.

MARGARET EDMONDS FERRIES
Well known as an educator and youth worker, Margaret Edmonds Ferries was born in Silver Water, near the western end of Manitoulin Island in 1886. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Edmonds, had settled in Silver Water, moving north from the Brantford area. Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds were among the founders of St. Andrew’s church in Silver Water, which was opened when Margaret was about 14 years old.
While still a teenager, Margaret was asked to take on her first teaching post at nearby Elizabeth Bay. A niece, Edna Hazzard, recalls her Aunt Margaret saying she had been asked by the school trustees to “let down her skirts and put up her hair” to make her look older than her pupils.
During the next few years, Margaret taught at a number of schools on Manitoulin and St. Joseph’s Islands, and attended Normal School in North Bay. She was a good teacher, says Mrs. Hazzard, although her methods may have seemed unorthodox for her time. She often had her students work on projects, and encouraged student participation in classes.
Interested in deepening her church involvement, Margaret enrolled in the Presbyterian Deaconess Training School in Toronto. After graduation, she spent five years as a teacher – without pay – in a free kindergarten for poor children in Winnipeg. The hard work damaged her health, and Margaret was forced to spend two years recuperating at home in Silver Water before returning to her teaching career.
During the summers, Margaret was counselor at an interdenominational summer school on Lake Mindemoya. She provided food and supplies, including a sleeping tent, so that children from the western end of Manitoulin could attend this residential camp.
In addition to her work with young people, Margaret occasionally conducted church services. Portions of one of the services she had prepared were read a few years ago at a church service led by the U.C.W. in Silver Water.
Margaret was a keen reader and enjoyed reciting poetry. She wrote a history of St. Andrew’s Church in Silver Water, and a history of Robinson Township where she had grown up. Several of her articles were published by the “Manitoulin Recorder” of Gore Bay.
In 1951, Margaret married Freeman Ferries of Vancouver, with whom she lived until her death of cancer a year later. She was 66.
Shortly before her death, Margaret prepared a message for her friends on Manitoulin Island, with the request that it be included in her obituary. It is a fitting comment on the life of this committed Christian:
I do not want any praise for me at all, but only praise for Him, who has led me ‘all the way’ since I was a little child. This is my message –
I have lived, seen God’s hand through my lifetime, and all is for the best. He gave me early training in a Christian home, brought me at the early age of twelve into His church where I was always surrounded with good influences and let into work for Him. All that may have been good or useful in any way in me comes directly through Him, and every joy or blessing comes from Him – so many good things.
