Little Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Finlay Taken
Died in Gore Bay on September 2nd Maudi Finlay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Finlay, in her fourth year. The passing of the little tot is a very sad case indeed as apparently the beginning of her illness was a severe attach of whooping cough, which gradually wore the little sufferer down until other complications set in to which she succumbed on Tuesday morning. ….is…death quite so sad as that …..and the sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved parents, who sky has been darkened by the loss of their dear little girl.

PEGGY FISCHER (TRIMBLE)

It is with great sadness to belatedly announce the passing of my aunt, Peggy Fischer (Trimble) who died peacefully February 23, 2005. Peggy was born January 10, 1916 in Montreal, the second of three children to Irish immigrants Tomas Trimble of Omagh and Elizabeth Trimble (Howe) of Maquiresbridge, Ireland. Following Peggy's birth the Trimbles, on the advice of friends Robert Fleming and wife Bess (Paten) moved to Little Current where Tomas operated a confectionery, grocery store and butcher shop on the main street where Island Discount now stands.
Peggy's early years in Little Current saw her excel in sports, winning medals in track and field as well as representing the town on a woman's hockey team which on both the Island and Northern Ontario Championships. Attending St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, she trained for three years, graduating as a nurse. Returning to Little current, Peggy nursed locally before getting a job at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in New York City. In New York she had the opportunity to see all the Broadway shows and stars of the day including Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra and Red Skelton.
Later, Peggy got a job in Dayton, Ohio working at the General Motors plant as a nurse. During this time she met and married a wonderful man, Homer Fischer. They moved to Washington D.C. then to St. Louis MO. where Homer worked as an engineer. They had three children, Terrance who followed his father's footsteps as an engineer, Jane who worked for a major department store and Thomas who joined the Marine Corps, served his country in Vietnam, later progressing through the ranks of the A.T.F., the U.S. Treasury Department and prior to his retirement the Department of Homeland Security.Peggy and Homer lived in St. Louis until retirement. They then moved to Florida and later to Arkansas. Every summer until health prevented them from travelling saw Peggy, Homer and the kids visit Little Current for their holidays where they stayed at the family homestead on 15 Robinson. Those summers would see Peggy and Homer at the local fishing holes including Little River as well as the government docks and the Police boathouse where the elusive muskie eluded Homer's numerous attempts to land the "Big One." Every day had the sound of fish frying on the grill and the aroma of blueberry pies cooking in the kitchen.
Peggy was the last surviving child of Tomas and Elizabeth Trimble. Her older brother, retired O.P.P Deputy Commissioner Thomas Trimble passed away in August 1985, and her younger sister, Mary Elizabeth McHarg (Trimble) passed away in November of 2003. She is predeceased by her loving husband Homer. Survived by son Thomas and his wife Sandi, daughter Jane, and son Terrance. Grandchildren C.J., Katie and Scott. Nieces and nephews John McHarg, Madeleine Trimble and Judy Miller (Trimble). Thank you for all the wonderful memories.

Pioneer Passes at West Manitoulin
After many months of confinement to her home, but free from any pain or suffering, Mary Ann Fisher, widow of the late Alfred Fisher, passed quietly to her rest in the early hours of Thursday, November 4th. Mrs. Fisher was in her eighty-sixth year.
Born ii (sic) Portsmouth, England, Mary Ann Foster came at an early age with her parents to Canada, the family taking up residence at Cookstown. It was here she met and married Alfred Fisher, and a few years later (in 1893 to be exact) the Fisher family moved to Manitoulin where they cleared a farm in the West end of the Island. Still alter a second farm was hewn out of the forest and for many years this second farm has been known as the Fisher homestead. The Fishers not only cleared two farms for West Manitoulin but through all the years of her residence her services were graciously given to everyone in need. It is a joy to record that as partial recompense for a life of unselfish service Mrs. Fisher spent her declining years in a home where every care and love was lavished on her. Mrs. Fisher is survived by a brother and sister; John Foster of Vancouver and Mrs. Jas. Duckworth of Burford. Also two sons and two daughters, Bert Meldrum Bay; Norman of Timmins, Ontario; Mrs. Nathaniel Wickett, of New Liskeard and Mrs. Joseph Millman of Meldrum Bay; with whom she has made her home for a number of years.

[Christina Fleming]

Wreck Surviver Called by Death
Owen Sound, Aug. 19-Mrs. Albert Fleming, one of two survivors of the wreck of the steamship Asia in Georgian Bay, Sept. 14, 1882, died suddenly last night, at her home in Darby Township. She was 74 years old. Mrs. Fleming then Christina Morrison, and D.A. Tinkus of Manitoulin Island were washed ashore on an island off Point Au Baril near Parry Sound several days after the wreck in which 148 persons lost their lives. They were given food and shelter by an Indian and his squaw and were finally brought to the mainland.
The wreck of the Asia was the greatest marine disaster in the history of Georgian Bay. The steamship was bound from Owen Sound to the head of the lakes and went down in a raging storm.
Mr. Tinkus died many years ago. Mrs. Fleming often recalled her harrowing experience as a ‘nightmare.’

STEPHEN FLETCHER

Obituary
Stephen Fletcher, a long time resident of Gore Bay, and an active member of the community, passed away to his Lord on Tuesday, May 9th, just two days after he and his wife Muriel celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
Stephen Fletcher was born in Yorkshire, England, immigrating to Canada in 1910, with his parents, settling in the Cambridge area. He married Muriel (St. Clair) on May 7th, 1932, and began learning the forge trade while working with Muriel's father Edmund St. Clair, who owned and operated the Galt British Forge. Mr. Fletcher continued to work in the blacksmith industry with the Canadian Machinery Corporation until the 1950s when new technology eventually took over, and jobs became few and far between.
In 1950, Stephen and Muriel and family began to holiday during the summer months in various spots around Gore Bay. Then in 1955, he built a cottage on the Lighthouse Road. The family vacationed there in the summers until they moved to Gore Bay permanently in 1957. The cottage was sold in the early sixties and is currently owned by Margo Little.
In 1957, Mr. Fletcher purchased 'Buds' Grocery from Bud Thorburn. He changed the name to 'Steve's Grocery' and operated the store for 17 years on the site where B&J's Restaurant stands now. He sold the store to Danny Nadeau and in 1979 the landmark building was torn down.
In the sixties, the Fletcher family began to dwindle as one after another began to leave the nest. The last one departed in 1967, the same year that Steve and Muriel took out a lease on the lighthouse. The lighthouse quickly became their permanent summer residence.
Once they were firmly established there, every summer, all the family members at one time or another began to visit 'the lighthouse' with their families for a day, two days, a week or even a month.
Mr. Fletcher's wife and eight children have fond memories of those 33 summers. Tents were pitched, trailers parked and it was quite common to have four or five different 'Fletcher families' there at once, and Steve and Muriel were at the center of the action. The last celebration for the Fletchers held at the lighthouse was last August and the occasion was Muriel's 90th birthday.
Mr. Fletcher served on the Gore Bay Council for a term, as ell as the Children's Aid Society, CNIB, Housing Authority, The Manitoulin Health Centre Corporation, and the Gideon Bible Society boards. He was an active member of the Gore Bay Gospel Hall and although he was not a pastor, he did conduct many services and funerals around the Island.
Mr. Fletcher performed several marriage ceremonies as well, including his son Peter and wife Jane Fletcher's wedding ceremony, which took place at the lighthouse in Gore Bay; daughter Miriam and son-in-law Howie Wailes in Timmins; and the marriage of his granddaughter Ann and husband Bill Cranston. He also taught bible studies at the Gore Bay Gospel Hall.
Funeral Services were conducted in the Wm. G. Turner Chapel on Saturday May 13th, 2000 with Steve and Muriel's three sons Paul, Philip and Andy Fletcher officiating.
