[AGNES GIBSON]

Passing of Mrs. Gibson
The town was cast into a shadow of gloom on Friday when a message arrived stating that Mrs. (Rev.) Gibson had died suddenly in the General Hospital, Toronto, on Friday morning.
Mrs. Gibson was stricken with a serious infection of blood poisoning in her hand which later entered her arm and while everything possible was done to confine its ravages to her arm it was found necessary to remove her to Toronto for further treatment. After her arrival there Dr. Baker received a letter from Dr. Starr stating that she was in good condition and that all hopes were entertained for saving her hand.
Later however some complication set in and Mrs. Gibson in a weakened condition, succumbed on Friday morning.
The fortitude and patience displayed by Mrs. Gibson throughout her terrible suffering, was admired by all.
Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and child. This is the second bereavement of a similar nature that Rev. Gibson has sustained which is very sad indeed.

[ JOHN GIBSON ]

Disasterous Fire - 1919
One of the saddest events that ever took place on the Manitoulin occurred in Mills township on the evening of September 24 whereby Mr. John Gibson lost his life, his barn containing the season's crop was destroyed by fire, as well as a new Ford car, some farm machinery and a valuable team of horses.
On the evening in question Mr. Gibson had returned from a neighbour's where he had been assisting in threshing operations. With his lantern in his hand he proceeded to the barn to attend to the usual evening duties. A short time after he called to his wife that the barn was on fire and asked her to ring for help on the telephone. He then returned to the barn ostensibly to lead his horses out and he was not seen again until his body burned beyond recognition was removed form the burning building. His wife heard him call several times but the heat and smoke made it impossible for anyone to go near him. Water was thrown repeatedly to the spot near the window where his call was last heard and it was with considerable personal risk the Mr. Chris Burns finally jumped in and threw out the charred remains.
Next day when the fire had abated the Ford car was overturned and was discovered that the lower top of the gasoline tank was open. Mr. Gibson had evidently opened it with the intention of draining sediment out of the tank unaware of the danger of doing so with a lantern standing near by. The lantern was found under the wreckage.
The funeral took place on Friday 26 to the Mills Cemetery the service conducted by Rev. R. Wiseman. Deceased was a member of the Orange order and the Burpee lodge attended in a body along with other visiting brethren. He leaves behind him a widow and five small children to mourn his loss also four sisters, Mrs. S. Bailey, Mrs. R. Bailey, Mrs. I. Bailey and Mrs. Wilson of Kagawong, also two brothers William and Albert of Burpee. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends goes out to the lonely ones in their heavy sorrow.

Death of John Gilchrist
Many of the old pioneers have passed away within a few weeks of each other. The late John Gilchrist was born at Nottawasaga, County of Simcoe, Ont., in the year 1841. About thirty-eight years ago he came to the Island of Manitoulin, settling on the 14th concession of the Township of Campbell. He was one of the first settlers and knew the privations peculiar to pioneer life. The mode of travel in those days was by means of the trail to Kagawong Lake, and thence by boat and portage to the North Channel. The overland travel was carried on, winter and summer, by means of a jumper, a mode of transportation much prized in those early days. Mrs. Gilchrist died about twelve years ago. Mr. Gilchrist is survived by two sons, Neil and Peter both on the 14 con. Of Campbell, and Mrs. Wm. Montgomery on the 15th concession, all residing within a short distance of each other, who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. Mr. Gilchrist was a man of a quiet, inoffensive disposition. He was a good neighbour and had the respect of the community in which he lived.

[RACHEL GILPIN]

Obituary
Mrs. Geo. Gilpin
It is our sad duty to chronicle the death of Mrs. George Gilpin, who died on the 12th of May at the home of her daughter Mrs. Wm. McDonald. Mrs. Gilpin had been ill for about two months and her death was not unexpected to her closest friends.
Mrs. George Gilpin came to the Island thirty-seven years ago from the township of Essa, near Barrie, and resided at the farm at Britainville until two years ago when she and Mr. Gilpin retired to Providence bay.
Mrs. Gilpin was one of Manitoulin’s great pioneers. She came to the Island when everything was in a very backward state. There were few good roads, no school, no churches and everything was enough to daunt all but the most optimistic. Among such surroundings as these Mrs. Gilpin’s life shines as a star across the turbid waters for she was above all things a true pioneer and always made the test of everything at hand. When the late Rev. James Steele made the rounds of his new circuit many years ago, Mrs. Gilpin opened her doors to the people and for some years afterwards church services were regularly held at her home. She was instrumental in organizing the first Sunday school at Britainville and was one of the leading teachers for many years. She worked unceasingly to build the Methodist church near her home and was one of its staunchest supporters.
The remains were quietly laid to rest in Grimsthorpe cemetery beside those of her daughter, Gertrude. The Rev. Mr. William Munro preached the burial service. He was assisted by the Rev. Mr. Newby and Rev. Mr. Brubaker, The pallbearers were her three sons, Walter, William and Earl; and her two son-in-laws, Mr. Wilson sterling and William McDonald.
Mrs. Gilpin always took a prominent part in everything that was for the uplift of the people of the district. She was a great church worker and her death is a distinct loss to the community. When asked upon what grounds she based her hope of salvation she answered with a smile “I know in whom I believe and am persuaded that he is able and willing to keep that which I’ve committed against that day”.
Good-bye dear wife, sainted mother, good councilor and friend; yet not good-bye, but au revoir, for we shall meet again. The dazzling splendors of heaven are now yours and this world is brighter and better for you having lived in it. You do indeed rest from your labours and your works do follow you.
